Preparing Tractor

  1. Remove the footplate and mudguards (if lights are fitted). Drain oil from gearbox and rear transmission housing, uncouple brake and clutch rods. Split tractor behind gearbox.
  2. Remove gear and Hi Lo selector assembly from top of gearbox and retaining housing assembly from back of gearbox. See Fig. 1.
  3. Remove P.T.O. selector plate assembly from left-hand side of rear transmission housing.
  4. Remove pump gear and oil shroud pressing. If bearings have been retained in housing when removed, they should be replaced on shaft. Check that oilseal sleeve is also replaced on upper shaft.
  5. Remove pinion connecting shaft.

Fitting Howard reduction gear

  1. Remove pump gear oil shroud from new retaining housing.
  2. Bolt reduction gear housing onto back of gearbox in place of Ford housing, ensuring that the gasket between Eousing and gearbox is in good condition, if not replace with new one.
  3. Fit pump drive gear and circlip on Extension shaft and bolt shroud round gear. See Fig. 2.
  4. Fit outer housing to front transmission case of tractor ensuring that dogs in outer housing are facing to rear and that selector lever is on Ieft hand side in the forward position so that the sliding dog is right back. See Fig. 3.
  5. Fit new connecting shaft to end of differential pinion shaft in rear transmission housing.
  6. Remove P.T.O. shaft from Tear transmission housing and assemble spigot on end of shaft into bush in end of extension shaft. See Fig. 4.
  7. Roll rear half of tractor until there are about 3 to 4 inches approx. between the mating faces of the outer housing and rear transmission housings ensuring that both faces are square and in line.
  8. Slide connecting shaft forward so that the splines just enter the sliding dog in centre of reduction gear without sliding off pinion shaft.
  9. Roll rear half of tractor to within 1 inch of mating faces then engage splines of P.T.O. shaft through selector housing hole in side of rear transmission housing and check that pump gear is engaged, turn motor over on starter. See Fig. 5.
  10. Close tractor right up and join with long bolts provided bolting right through Reduction Gear Housing and Transmission case flanges and replace Gear and Hi-Lo selector assembly into top of gearbox.
  11. Replace Ford P.TO. selector assembly in left-hand side of rear transmission housing and chek that reduction gear selector P.T.O. selector are both operating correctly.
  12. Bolt on new footplace brackets. Unscrew end forks on brake and clutch rods and replace with new forks provided and recouple.
  13. Modify cut out in side of footplates and replace mudguards on tractor. See Fig. 6.
  14. Fill gearbox and rear transmission housing with correct oil as recommended by tractor manufacturer to correct levels.
