Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap - microbes or just dirty diesel?
Thanks again for the reply Emiel. I definitely think that my problems were caused by long periods of non use over winter. The tractor is kept outside in an open shed and possibly suffered with condensation forming inside the tank. I have been very careful with filling with clean diesel in the past. ...

Re: So you're supposed to change the oil in your governor - Who knew?
Thanks for the reply Emiel. Yes, from your description my governor is the vacuum type governor with the throttle control on the air manifold. Thanks for clearing that up for me, saves me another job!

So you're supposed to change the oil in your governor - Who knew?
I really must get on with reading the workshop manual in great detail! I came across this previous thread recommending changing the oil in the governor every time you change the oil in the engine, any further advice on these matters would be appreciated. I have a 1959 Dexta; is that the type of gove...

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap - microbes or just dirty diesel?
Thanks for the tip Sandy on the flushing the tank with new diesel before use. As far as the YouTube link goes, I was only really linking to it, to show the bacteria growing in the fuel images. I would concur with your advice on cleaning being the best method to resolve the issues that I was having. ...

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap - microbes or just dirty diesel?
So I decided I had better change the fuel filter, as I had only replaced it once since I got the tractor. There was a lot of black sludge inside the fuel filter. I thought while I was at it, I had better give the diesel tank a good clean out. I decided to leave the tank in place on the tractor to av...

Re: Fordson Dexta Cast Iron or Cast Steel?
Thanks for the reply Sandy. As far as I know it's cast iron too. Maybe someone else may know for certain and give a definitive answer. Also I presume when the tractors were originally supplied, they were supplied without the stool hitch (optional extra) and that the backend had four threaded holes t...

Fordson Dexta Cast Iron or Cast Steel?
So I have a problem with the stool hitch on my Dexta, similar to the one pictured in this ad; https://www.adverts.ie/tractors/complete-stool-hitch-for-sale/7626462 When I got the tractor, the stool hitch was attached, but it was hanging on by a thread and the four bolts that secure it underneath the...

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap
Thanks for the fuel tank cleaning tips Dave. I don't use my tractor on the road thankfully, so not to far to go, to get her back to the shed. I forgot to say earlier on that my Dexta is back purring like a kitten. It's amazing how you can gradually lose power over time and not really notice. It's on...

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap
Thanks for that information Brian, I don't think it was relevant in my case, the fuel tap filter on my tractor was well and truly gunked up. Having said that I must investigate my fuel cap and see if the air hole needs cleaning out.

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap
Thanks for the confirmation that the filter on the fuel tap is glued on and not intended for removal. It seemed to have a very fine gauze and some of the black gunge was inside this gauze (on the wrong side of the filter screen). I cannot see the exact fuel tap/filter that I bought over five years a...

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap
Thanks for the reply Sandy, it's all back together already. I did soak the filter in petrol for cleaning, not quite as long as you suggest, I'll know now to leave it a little longer next time. The filter didn't seem to want to come off the tap, so I left it on for the petrol soaking. The filter look...

Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap - microbes or just dirty diesel?
Just wondering how often one should change the fuel tap filter on the Dexta? (The one that sits up inside the diesel fuel tank) I was out ploughing with the Dexta and I raised the revs up and it started stalling. I figured it must be a problem with the fuel supply. I got her started again but she wa...

Gearbox transmission flush with Diesel tractor
Just lifted the gear levers on the Fordson Dexta to see a very creamy oil mixture. So water must have found it's way in some way. I had the oil emptied out and was going put some diesel in to flush out the remnants of the old oil/water mix. I thought I had better check here to see if it was recommen...

Re: 58 Dexta - Belt rubbing lower radiator hose
If you're replacing the leaking hose, be no harm to put a couple of jubilee clips around the lower radiator hose where the belt meets the hose, should offer better protection than just relying on the correct placement of the hose.

Re: Dexta Engine Block Cracks what to look for
I'm not sure what caused the cracked block in my case. I was told a story once from my father about a Dexta "throwing a rod" through a block. I really don't know anything much about the innards of the engine so I don't know if that could be a possibility in my case. Certainly my mechanic had encount...

Re: Dexta Engine Block Cracks what to look for
I've only bought one tractor in my life, a Fordson Dexta, so I can only tell you of my experience in that particular case. I had not been told by the seller that the engine block was cracked, but my mechanic had mentioned to me before I went to see the tractor that they suffer a lot with cracked blo...

I can't help with locating a place to buy a four blade fan for a Super Dexta. Just I remember previous discussions about mating 2 two blade fans together to make up a four blade fan. It certainly is, this is a real bitsa tractor. I replaced the inner filter a few years ago. Luckily the motor factors looked up the number on the outside casing and had one in stock. I think it was off a Nissan van or pick up! Ah sure it does the job.
