The most likely common cause for thin engine oil liver the max on the dipstick and smells of diesel is a failed lift pump diaphragm.

Re: Introducing Me and my Major. (Lots Of Pics)
I haven't yet either but I was going to use the bolts that secure the drawbar plates on the left hand side and then fit a longer pin onto the lift arm in the usual place. I haven't tried to lift the plough I want to since I have tweaked the hydraulic pressure to 2500psi which one of the service manu...

Re: Primary gearbox breather stud
Mine is fitted front left nearest the starter motor, mine had been soldered up so I drilled it out and when it had thick 80w90 gear oil in never let anything out but I haven't been able to run it yet with thinner oil. Although my engine revs to 2500rpm alot faster than standard it still didn't throw...

Re: Hand Brake Adjustment
If you want I can measure the distance between the cam and the nut on mine before I strip it all back down again, with a bit of patience I would of thought you can adjust it whilst it's all together through the selector cover.

Re: Gearbox noises
Another update but this time with some bad news  :curse: So I've spent a lot of time on it lately and got it nearly all back together less the footplates, fenders and rear wheels, I've had it running today on axle stands in all gears for about 20 mins but when I ran it in high 3rd after about a...

Re: Hand Brake Adjustment
Yeah mine did that I found one of the linings half sheared off so as soon as you touched the pedal it locked up. Which nut was that the one on the belt drive pulley... if so how much did you tighten it? i couldn't find a spec in the manual so I just gave it plenty and locked it off... it was loose w...

Re: Hand Brake Adjustment
Mine worked well although I did have a little trouble with the new handbrake lever not fitting but the setting up the nut is a bit tricky... I can upload some pictures if you want... did you take your gearbox out to do it? Ive just ran mine up today and the bush i have made and fitted into the rever...

Re: Hand Brake Adjustment
No I wouldn't of thought so I bought new ones for mine and they were the same thickness... You need to undo the nut to remove the slack as the cam pushes in the nut which engages the brake though the spring.

Hi was it fairly straightforward? I've got to tackle mine at some point to take the play out, what parts would you suggest I could pre order ready? I assume you can't get the lip seal for the output shaft?

Re: Hand Brake Adjustment
Yeah I've just done mine the distance for setting it up is critical as stated in the service manual although tricky to manage to measure accurately, to take out freeplay you will have to loosen the nut, I had my gearbox out when I set it all up last Friday and the 13.8 inches from memory distance is...

Re: 1956 major - new owner few questions
Hi Mike To solve your top hat issues you could try opening up the intake fins to let air though easier but make sure their still at an angle as there job is to swirl the air causing the heavier dirty dust particles to be centrifugally thrown out through the to top outer vents. As for your double clu...

Re: super - stuck handbrake?
It's probably worth lifting the hydraulic top cover off and then you can see if it's rear transmission or gearbox, if it was the handbrake plates then with both wheels in the air one should run backwards and the other forward freely, it sounds more like the rear breaks seized or a deferential failur...

Ah good I was hoping so Adrian. I just need to get it back on the road for this autumn which is looking like a fair task at the moment with the little spare time i get. Yes there is an unloading valve that is common for sticking on them although i've never worked on super hydraulics, this may be of some use - http://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5535&p=38656&hilit=sticking+valve+unload+valve#p38656 This may be of some help for your casting c...

Re: Purchased New Performance Super Major
The PTO needs to be engaged as the hydraulic pump is driven off the PTO shaft, you'll also need to have the clutch released, It looks like a very good purchase what are you planning to use it for?

Another quick update I've split the tractor and stripped the gearbox completely, and took the shaft and gear to a chap who is going to make and fit me a new bush. I've got 3 new ball bearings as they were pitted and noisy. I've rebuilt the bull pinion shafts with original bearings and new seals. jus...

It's a Diesel Major Henk :) I've managed to spend a couple of days on it and managed to strip everything out of the rear transmission and found the diff had lost it's pre-load on the bearings and was now baggy which unconvincingly I assumed that was the cause for my noises after I stripped the diff ...
