Tachometer cable rpm
Can some one tell me the rpm of the tachometer cable relative to engine on my 1959 Dexta? Does the cable spin at the same rpm as the engine or a ratio? I'm toying with the idea of making a simple output for electronic tachometer.

Re: Loader fitting on Dexta's
Wow... But that is a Dexta fitted behind a loader, not a loader fitted to a Dexta  I'm not sure I can see any advantage to doing it that way, having the loader fixed to the front axle with a pivot under the back - but it is certainly different :) Lol, you're not wrong there. The bucket is ap...

Re: Loader fitting on Dexta's
John Daley asked me to post some pics of my dexta with frontend loader that was fitted in the late 60's. I just took a heap of photos and uploaded them to a really old flickr account of mine (was amazed the account still existed). There is also some old photos in there from when the loader was fully...

Yes, I could have put it in better words. What I was trying to say is that all oils become much thinner when they get to operating temp. So a 15 grade oil when cold is thicker compared to a hot 40 grade oil (at the same temp, the 15 will be thinner, have a lower viscosity), So yes, at operating temp...

I would guess that there's nothing wrong with your temp gauge. The problem is that your engine is running cold - its not good to run an engine cold -it needs to be at operating temp (roughly 90 degrees Celcius I think). That's why we have multigrade oils - it gives good lubrication until the engine ...

Alan, I'm just thinking, have you checked your thermostat to see if its working, and not stuck open. When I took my old thermostat out, and ran her with no thermostat for a few months, she wo...

Awh, TSG, know I have to pressure clean it to get a good picture of the hydraulic pump. The front seal has got 'a bit' of leak, so its quite dirty up the front. Will have to borrow a pressure cleaner, mine broke a while ago. While you are waiting, here's a few pictures I posted of her a while ago. I...

Everyone seems to have the same problem. I still haven't solved it - I tried the return line from the injectors leak off, but found that I get very little if any leak off! You may have read that getting the fuel from the filter is not recommended because of the higher pressure, but then that would d...

Hi there Alan the control box is the voltage regulator for the old generator - its usually behind your dashboard. Older alternators had a similar regulator setup. Most alternators these days have the regulator built in, which is what you've probably got, so no need for a separate regulator, and that...

I've read on this forum that the fuel supply for your heater plug may drain into the manifold over time, this could explain all the smoke. You did install a new primer pump , so maybe something to do witht that. PS. Any kids been playing on your tractor? (hey what does this do, push, push, push -squ...

Since it's been standing for so long all the heavier particles will probably have set at the bottom of the sump,so i would drain it cold, and as you said, just take some more time. Thanks Rob, that's what I was thinking, about any steel particles. So while I was at it, I tried out an idea I picked up...

Oil change way overdue
Hi everyone. The Dexta hasn't been started for a couple of months and way overdue for an oil and filter change. I'm wondering should I start her up to get the old oil hot, or leave the old oil in the bottom of the sump and drain it without warming up. It's still warm here, 24 degrees celcius tomorro...

+1 on the above. Forums like this one and Stefan's have been a huge help and encouragement, not to mention the savings in cost, in helping me with tractor restoration. Without such Fora, the task would be lonely and daunting. Thanks everyone, Ben Totally agree, but is' fora' really the plural for f...

B+ battery D+ warning light The W terminal is for a tacho I think. Wire it up and turn ignition on and make sure warning light glows. Then start her up and make sure warning light goes off. Then check battery voltage -should be 13.5-14.5 volts or so, quite a bit above the battery voltage. Take a loo...

Hi there Gerry. When you say alternator, do you mean the original generator, or do you know the generator has been replaced with an alternator? With the original generator, trying measuring the volts at the battery with the engine running at higher revs. If the volts aren't 13.5 or higher then you m...

Hi there Terry, the valve/jet going into the manifold can be dismantled, there is a small collar holding the spring and ball bearing in place. I removed the collar with an easy-out, cleaned everything, then reassembled -after cleaning, I found it still needs quite a bit of pressure to get fuel throu...

But how does the nozle work with in the manifold, is it indeed ependent on the heat from the glowplug and than pump a small amount of diesel in to ignite and basicaaly create a fire in the manifold? Thanks for your reply Brian. Normally I would buy a 20 litre drum of diesel tractor oil for about $80-90, but you put me on to the idea of looking at car oil. I ended up buying that oil I was talking about, a so-called 'trade pack' (10 litres) of valvoline 20w/50 for $35. The API classification is '...
