Re: I don't understand oil wieghts...

As I understand it, modern detergent oils work fine in any engine with full-flow oil filters. With that design, the filters strain out all carried particles and the oil returns to the engine clean. The reason old engines often fail when introduced to detergent oil is that the oil filter, if fitted a...

Re: Injectors and pump

To finish this story off, so many years later… Peter Strong did rebuild the pump. I left it in a carrier bag behind a tyre outside his workshop, out of hours. This was his suggestion. All went well, the tractor fired up almost as a new vehicle and went back into (cricket outfield) service.

Re: Position control pin

Tku Commander
Last year whil gang mowing, an hours work and bouncing around suddenly brought the lift to life and it gave a swan neck to the gangs! That seems consistent with a stuck unload valve. Why was there an O ring in the first place if it's not necessary?

Re: Position control pin

Couldn't drift it out so as a tempo measure I've taken up the adjustment on the turnbuckle. Contact is now made but on reassembly I still have no lift. Apart from standing for a long time, nothing els has changed. Why won't it lift? :x

Re: Position control pin

Is it the same diameter throughout? It's easier to drift from outside in in that it may break given how worn it is from the inside out. But the bracing from outside in is in danger of being one of the mechanism springs.

Re: Position control pin

Commander that was all I needed thank you. I have found it and seen it - the cam is rough and seems a little corroded although everything else is covered in grease. The pin is about half worn through so the symptoms correctly diagnosed the problem. Next question though - can the pin be replaced in s...

Position control pin

I have finally taken the hydraulic top off. The symptoms of a gradual deterioration in lift arms lifting at all at the time I investigated suggested a worn position control pin. But ... where is it? I am new to dealing with hydraulics but do not find the user manual very useful in this field - it do...

I now have back the rebuilt pump from Peter Strong. And I have all the old bits. I will photograph and post in due course.

Re: Injectors and pump

:eyes: An update to the saga: I have now removed the 4588 injector pump. Even with a 3/8 drive u/j it was difficult. Now I know why - the speed regulator lever, attached to the pump between it and the block was loose on its splines and had slipped in the past. I think too it was the wrong way around...

Re: Injectors and pump

The 4696 does but i don't know about the 4588. I think it does and I think I had to top up this one - hence the probable reason for wear. The pneumatically governed ones I believe use diesel in the system but I wouldn't swear to it.

Re: Injectors and pump

Thanks Gerald - I'll look forward to that.
Why do I leave it until Friday to find a 3/8 drive socket set with universal coupling and 1/4" extension bar for the correct length?
I'm sure, Ben, Ford could have found a more awkward position for bolts but it would have been difficult.

Re: Injectors and pump

Well now, I'd planned to take the pump off early this week and left myself what I though was enought time. The manual says remove the 5 nuts and spring washers. I've seen on this board comments about difficult access. How about impossible access? It looks like the pump is bolted to an adapting plate...

Re: Injectors and pump

It's a 16 engine which confirms it as a Super Dexta so with timing based on engine bore rather than pump type it should be 20 deg BTDC. I think.

Re: Injectors and pump

Gerald
This tractor has Super nosecone 4588 mechanical pump. That should make it an F3.152 enigine. Do I assume that the timing is 20BTDC because it's a Super or 26BTDC because it's a 4588 pump?

Re: Injectors and pump

Blue 32 I think I'm happy with the timing and marks now. I have removed and cleaned the air cleaner and it has new oil. A great deal of grain and grass came out of the metal gauze when washed in petrol. It also draws well through the primary cleaner - the cap - so I don't think we lack air. But we d...

Re: Solenoid clicking

Thinking about it, the problem has to be the wiring to the solenoid as only a poor voltage would allow the solenoid to tick. And you've replaced the unit so it's unlikely that two would be faulty. Worth the try of shorting the two major terminals though just to prove the point.

Re: Solenoid clicking

If you've replaced the solenoid and it still ticks that is odd as it should, with a good earth, good charge and good live just clunk once. If you short the two terminals on the solenoid - in other words bybass it, then the starter motor should spin. If it does not then your problem is either the con...
