Re: Steering box refurbishment

Thanks Sandy. That was pretty much my plan, don't try to fix what isn't broken (yet). I was concerned by the significant wear on the plate with the curved slot in it, which is not meant to be there from what I can see in the parts book...

Steering box refurbishment

In the process of restoring the old petrol FM, I decided to open the steering gearbox, mostly to clean and seal it. This is what I found. Also, there were no shims fitted to either the side plate or the steering wheel shaft. At the moment, the steering does not have much play in the gearbox, most is...

Re: petrol / kero

Thanks. I'm looking at this one as a combination Tach and Hour meter. ELING 85mm Universal Auto Marine Tachometer Gauge 0-3000RPM with Adjustable Hour Meter and RPM Alarm with Red or Yellow Backlight

Re: petrol / kero

I am actually more interested in an hour meter, I will probably install an electronic tach. I have tried a cheap electronic hour meter, but it is not consistent, so maybe I'll look for an electronic tach with a built in hour meter....

Cheers

Re: petrol / kero

Thanks Sandy. Another question, my new copper cylinder head gasket seems to be leaking some coolant slightly, and I recall reading something about the copper head gaskets being prone to that vs the composite ones. I now have about 1.5 hours on the engine and will be re-torquing the head tomorrow, so...

Re: petrol / kero

Hi Sandy: Thanks for that info. Is the gearing correct to mate the speedo/hour meter to the auxiliary shaft gear (I assume it is the same)? Some kind of an adapter plate could work with a large threaded portion to fit into the hole and align with the drive gear possibly. Otherwise drilling and tappi...

Re: petrol / kero

Well I got the old girl running again, after replacing my new carburator float and needle with the old one! The new one flooded the engine badly. Now I am wondering if I can install the Agriline Tachometer/Hour meter on my 52 engine? Does anyone know if this can be installed into the casting next to...

Re: petrol / kero

I ended up getting a piece machined to fit the new oil pump. It is probably the best machined part on the whole tractor now :). Fits perfectly, so I am hoping to start the engine next weekend :)

Happy New Year

Re: petrol / kero

Thanks Sandy. I am looking into machining a piece to get the distributor lined up with the gear slot as opposed to using the old pump. Is the drive gear on the top pf the oil pump shaft just pressed on? Wonder how to get the drive gear off the pump shaft?

Merry Christmas!

Re: petrol / kero

I know this is an old post, but thought I would see if someone might know the answer to this question...I have rebuilt a 1952 Petrol engine and purchased a new oil pump, which is now nicely installed. Just in the process of re-installing the rebuilt distributor and have found that the new oil pump d...

Re: Paint codes

I think I have found the paint code, at least an old Dupont number. I am getting a sample this week, but the paint store made up a small batch and it matches the inside of the headlight quite well. Once I have painted something and if it works, I will post the Dupont number, as it is anumber than an...

Paint codes

Does anyone know the actual paint codes for the "Empire Blue" used on the 1952-53 Fordosn Majors? I have finally got my engine back together and it needs painting. I can find paint in the UK, but getting it shipped to Canada is not easy, so I am trying to find a North American suppler, or at least g...

Re: Bearings for primary transmission

Hi Sandy: I found the N305 bearing but it differs from the original in that the outer race is double lipped and holds the rollers and cage, and the inner race is single lipped. The original bearing MRJA25 is single lipped on the outer race so that the outer race can be pressed into place and the rol...

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I am using a different parts diagram, but the part numbers and bearing description I am looking for are: R&M MRJA25 25X62X17mm Diagram Ref #9 Part Number - N 7118 D Qty = 2 3DC/V 25X?X17 Diagram Ref#68 Part Number - E1ADKN-7118-A Qty = 1 These are straight...

Re: Bearings for primary transmission

HI Sandy:

I have taken them to a bearing supply shop and they are looking for equivalent bearings, so I don't have them with me to get the numbers. What I am hearing from them is that the numbers are not helping them....

Bearings for primary transmission

Hello Gents: I am looking for information on the specs for the roller bearings used in the primary transmission. Due to rusting, I am replacing all of the transmission bearings in my 1952 FM (petrol) and am having trouble finding bearings to replace the smaller roller bearings in the primary transmi...

Re: Timing gear noises and oil presssure - petrol engine

Hi Sandy:

I found an older post from Matias, who mentioned that the "needle" bearings on the upper shaft go, which I assume is the roller bearing you are referring to that the input shaft rides in? It would be #9 in the parts diagram. I will try pulling out the shaft and see what happens...

Re: Timing gear noises and oil presssure - petrol engine

Hi Sandy: Thanks for your reply. Will the input shaft just pull out including the bearing? Is there a smaller bearing inside on the end of the shaft? I was assuming that the outer bearing would need to be pressed out from inside the primary gearbox. With regard to the PTO seal, is this the one that ...

Re: Timing gear noises and oil presssure - petrol engine

So some good progress now. New custom pistons have arrived from California and will be delivered to the machine shop on Monday. The shop is working on getting the liners at the proper height and square with the deck, one of them is sitting high on one side apparently. I fabricated a dolly for the tr...

Re: Underslung exhaust system for Fordson New Majors

I have been in touch with Martin Cox regarding the underslung exhaust and it looks well made. Interestingly they also have parts available for the petrol engine, like valves and guides, and even carburetor kits, incl. gaskets, float and pins etc. I have now gotten custom pistons made for mine, but t...

Re: Engine block inaccuracies normal

Thanks Gents for the mention of Westwood Liners, I will check on that. It is not too late yet, as the pistons have not been made, so new liners would certainly be better than machining the old ones...The piston company is recommending 0.003-0.004" clearance on the pistons to allow for expansion...

Re: Engine block inaccuracies normal

Hi Mike: Thanks for your timely write-up. I am in the process of re-building a 1952 Fordson Major petrol engine. The crank is getting ground and we are expecting to go 0.010" oversize for both the mains and big end bearings. I will discuss with the machine shop about getting the mains checked for al...

Re: Timing gear noises and oil presssure - petrol engine

Surprising to me that the cam profile etc. is the same for all engines? Probably a fair bit of improvement could be had with the gas engine with a different profile...but not going to mess with it. Re: Timing gear noises and oil presssure - petrol engine

Further inspection of things at the machine shop and it looks like it would be a good idea the change out the camshaft because the hole for the dowel has been ovaled from the thrashing around of the bolts and dowel. It looks like the camshaft is the same part number for the petrol and diesel engines...
