Some people have said 140 which is a bit thick for winter times and others said 90.

Gearbox Oil.
Do I need straight 90 or straight 140 in my Fordson N gearbox? I do use the old girl for ploughing.

Should I put 90 or 140 Non-Detergent in my Fordson N's Gearbox?

Re: Fordson N or E27N Spark Plugs.
I have now solved the problem by fitting Autolite 3077's and having a set of Champion C-5's as spares. A fellow ploughman was saying that the Champion's (W14 or W20) are too good for a Lucas mag, whereas they will run well in say a Case C.

I was thinking of using anti-freeze in my 2, how much do I require? I guess its a 50/50 mix or a 60/40?

Lister-Cockshutt Plough
Hi I used a Lister-Cockshutt plough behind my Fordson N and sometimes it be the only one at a match or its spot the Ransomes, anyway, il get to the point, (no pun intended) Ive noticed that a lot of other ploughmen (or women) carry a spare disc, is this a must? Its just I used my friends Narrow Wing...

I might have someone else take a look at that magneto
That was on the Champion W20's in a ploughing match the other week. On the C5's it runs on all four and has become easier to start.

Re: Fordson N or E27N Spark Plugs.
Well, since I placed these plugs in, it seems to get hotter quicker. Only other thing I can think of is its normall. It was only firing on 3 just before it gave up and was trying to fire on 1.

Re: Fordson N or E27N Spark Plugs.
I would be interested to know the mechanism by which spark plugs contribute to an engine temperature issue? That little spark doesn't add much heat. Perhaps the timing of the spark is off somewhat. Type of plug will, they have slightly longer tips which get hot, better for burning TVO. Cheers Ollie

Re: Fordson N or E27N Spark Plugs.
Well, after a fiddle around today, I got the old Fordson N running on some old Champion's and on TVO. Then took her for a run around and run perfectly, didn't even need to increase the rev's. Only down side is she gets hot on these plugs.

Nothing wrong with the magneto, as I said I had a specialist sort it out. It is the plugs!

The coil should be fine, It was checked over not too long a go when the gears were replaced. I was going to fit a GF4 to the tractor at one stage.

Re: Fordson N or E27N Spark Plugs.
I have had better luck with Auto Lites in early equipment and vehicles that use the 7/8th -20 thread plugs. Yes, new Champs seem to foul quickly. With that said, I have had the very best luck with vintage take apart plugs no matter what make. The fine spindly electrodes and cleanable porcelins seem...

Ive used Champion W20's and Autolite 3077's, What are better plugs to get? Or is there some that can be recommended to me? Champion W20's gave up on me in a ploughing match yesterday.

Re: SR4 won't fit
Ive had abit of a think on the subject. While trying to get my E27N running today, I fitted my RF4 off my Standard as its own RF4 is not sparking. Anyway I refitted the RF back on my Standard afterwards and the coupling was easy to move about to line up with the drive coupling. Being Put back to nor...

Re: Fordson Major E27N
Hi Oliver, Have you looked for any of the casting codes yet? They are a letter-number-letter code. The easiest to find is the one on the side of the gearbox near where the shifter assembly bolts on. The other clue as to the age is what steering wheel is on it? Is it a three spoke alloy wheel or a f...

Hi Does the engine number on the block match the number on the plate on the bulk head by the air cleaner, if you are using the engine number and the 2 don't match it could be its had a newer motor, then the casting codes on gearbox and stuff would date the rest of the tractor. or somebody has playe...

Hi Oliver If the oil levels in the gearbox and rear axle are low and high respectively then it is usually down to the leather oil seals in the PTO unit under the gearbox. Not a difficult job, just a pain to drain all the oil (lots of it!!), remove the PTO shaft and drop the PTO unit. Then dig out t...

Yeah, i knew of the frost cracks and where to look, my N has a nice big patch on the side of its block. Very thin casting there, no wonder it was easerly split open in frosty weather.

Fordson Major E27N
I should be going to view a Fordson E27N this week and wondered what should I look out for that could be a problem. Aprently wings are bad and tyres may need replacing. (that will hurt my wallet). Any problems too look out for with things like the Hydrullics or Pulley?
Many Thanks

Mine had Champion C5's in it when I brought it. 3 of them where the proper milk churn shaped 1's.
