E27N serial number.

Morning Gents,

I am trying to help a pal with his E27N;

He was looking for the serial number, and it isn't on a plate on the firewall. There Is a number stamped (not cast) on the engine block where it joins the bell housing.

This number is 1178994.

Does this sound right for a serial number? On the adjoining bell housing, is stamped T D 43. Is T D the year and month? (as in, 1952 and April?) Can anyone tell me about the "43"?

Thanks for your help. The tractor has stood for 20 years and slobbers oil from one cylinder. We agreed before pulling it down, to give it some lugging work to get it warmed up well, and see if it cleared as the rings freed off. Does this sound right to you? No clinking sounds of broken rings or anything.

Thanks in advance, and hope it's warmer back home!
Minus 27C here at present.

Richard.

Dear Richard

Your Serial No on the engine clutch housing flange looks correct for a tractor produced somewhere near the end of 1950 (1951 production started with Serial No 1180610). The stamped number on the gearbox should read STD 43, indicating a Standard 4.3 transmission.

You need to look for the casting code numbers on the major castings of the tractor. There should be one on the engine block, on the left (oil filler) side, one on the gearbox casting, just behind the gear selector plate on the LHS, one on the rear axle casing, usually just forward and below the brake cover. There is also usually one on the front axle. The casting code is made up of letter, number, letter. The first letter is the month (A Jan through to P December), the number is the day of the month (1 - 31), the last letter is the year code (N for 1949, P for 1950, S for 1951).

You are looking for something like M23P, which would indicate that the casting was made on 23 October 1950, or L9P, indicating 9 September 1950. If all your casting codes are quite close to each other, then you have an original tractor. If not, major bits have been changed throughout its life. Good luck. Tim E

Good evening Tim,

Thanks for explaining all of this to me. I am better versed on the Fordson Major, (New Major) and have three of those. The code sounds like it runs in the same manner.
I had no idea on the "STD 4.3 " stampings. Thanks for that!

I will pass the information on to him, and also have a look myself at the date codes.

All the best,
Richard.
