FSM.........Fordson Super mystery!

Post by RH »

It's myslf again,.......... with more questions!

These Q's are regarding Another old FSM that I have.

Got her a year or two ago, and she started V. badly, and ran worse!

Pulled her apart to some degree.
5 bent pushrods (Had been started with ether and decompression lever for years)
work progressed, did valves, put in new rings, new main and big end bearings, and put all back together.

Timing seems off when marks line up, so altered it 'till she would start. Still ran badly.
removed timing cover to see if a key had sheared.
All was as it should be.
The thread close by re. Smoking power major has a few things for me to try.
Here is my Q;

There were no rotators on the exhaust valves.
For a start, I just set the valves then discovered that rotators should Always be fitted.
I got a set of caps from a wrecker, and,
They Don't fit like they do on the other FSM!

On my other tractor, the rotator caps fit well down over the valves and are hard to get a hold of to lift off.
On This tractor, the caps sit up high when against the collets
Also, the gap between the end of the valve and the inside of the rotator Appears to be more than 25 thou. (.025") whereas it should be 1-3 thousandth.

I think I need to post a picture!
The engine by the way is right for a super. S/N is in the 15,900's ...and the valves are the newer type, tapered not square shouldered at the collet end.

Will try a picture today sometime.

Sorry this sounds a bit confusing!!

Richard.
