Lift shaft

In my hydraulic lift cover, when I flipped it over I noticed there is a LOT of grease in there. Clearly the grease from the lift shaft has got into the lift cover itself and I guess can contaminate the oil. Is this normal ? Is there meant to be a seal which prevents this ?
