Fixing number plates on

I have just got my historic registration for my 1953 FM from the DVLA and have ordered a pair of plates. Do I have to have both on, or just the rear one? How do you fix one on the front if needed? ( The DVLA were most helpful, and got really excited when they realised that the chap at the next desk was also registering a FM (1958) on a historic number. The odds against that must be astronomical! We got suceeding numbers.)
