Fordson Major / Super Major internal PTO SEAL

Post by Emiel »

Hello,

A warning to all of you concerning the double lip oil seal between gearbox and rearaxle housing on the PTO shaft.

There are two shaft diameters fitted to these tractors, requiring Oil rings of different internal diameters. For as far as I've found out:

From start of production tot june 63 a shaft with diameter on seal location of 2 1/8" was used.
From june 63 tot end of production a shaft with diameter ons seal location of 1 3/4" was used. This shaft also came available for service for the older units due to a better sealing oil seal ring. According to manual.

Service manual from www.fordson.se supplement issued march 64 states:
To permit the fitting of a larger, improved type of oil
seal the portion of the shaft immediately behind the
bearing location has been decreased in diameter.
For service, the new P.T.O. shaft and oil seal together
replace the shaft and sealJirted to tractors built prior to
engine number o8C 960337 and they must befitted as a
pair when replacing a shaft in a previous type P.T.O.
gearbox. The previous oil seal, but not the shaft, will be
retained for servicing previous Major tractors.
Thanks to the guys from Fordson.se.

Part number for the old one is:
- double lip seal 81717957 in current cnh system, or E1ADKN 7297A 3,5" OD, 2 1/8 ID, 3/4" width
- Single lip seal 81717958 in current cnh system, or E1ADKN 7297B (please check wether you have to order on set to get two)

Part number for the new one is:
- 81805050 or E1ADDN7297A (this probably is the double lip seal. 3,5"OD, 1 3/4" ID, 3/4" width

If you are going to replace, please disassemble and measure shaft, before ordering new seals. Otherwise you pay twice. I learned that the expensive way.

Rgds
