Hi

I have changed the front wheel bearing, but wheen I also put on a new felt seal, the wheel want spin freely.
The felt seal is approx. 11 - 12 mm thick, and compressible.
What is your experience?
The mfr is Vapormatic, and made for the Major.

Should the felt be soaked in oil or something?

I am also surprised that the grase nipple is not directing the grease towards the bearing,
but just into the large hub space.
Is the large hub space supposed to be completely filled with grease, so any new grease wil force grease into the bearing?

What type of grease are you using or recomending?

I recently opened two front wheel hubs.
In one there was used a grease which was very thin or liquid.
Here the bearings seems to be in good order.
It was also plenty of grease.
This Wheel had no felt seal

In the other it was used a regular grease.
It seems to be hard and of no use.
Here the bearings needed to be changed.
I also had to add that the previous owner was not happy on greasing, because it was to little as well.

These two Wheel hubs came from different owners

According to the parts list there should be no felt seal in it.
Loked at Histoparts and found they also sell a kit with a steel/felt seal. As far as I can remember I have not put one in.
I also find it strange that the whole cub needs to be full with grease to get the right amound of grease in the bearings. Just put a lot of grease in it when assembly the wheel.
I use normaal grease.

It is kind of strange, but none of the parts manuals shovs the bearings or the felt on the figures,
except one, and that is the "Owners edition" part list for Fordson Super Major.

From Owners edition you will find the P/N for the felt = E27N-1193

If you look in the Repair Manual you will find the felt seal and Dust Shield in Figure 207.

You saw it on Histoparts homepage, but you will also see it on Agriline and many other suppliers homepage.

I don't say it is needed, unless you drive in a lot of dust and dirt.


The hub has a grease plug, and maintenance manual tell us to grease every 50 hours.
What is the point?

I find at the I&T shop service number FO12 it has number 1190, but that has a dust seal.
Also in a repair manual from 1954. So there should be one in afther all.
Can't remember putting on in, but then again it's 13 years ago when I did the job and never have to take the wheels of since.

About not fitting right as the wheels do not turn free, remember, a lot of part come from the land of nearly right.
I don't think you have to soaked the felt seal in oil as it is a grease seal.

I don't ever remember seeing a seal. I changed a lot of front wheels when tyres were punctured.
Always filled the cap with grease when refitting wheel and then pumped grease in via grease nipple until it came out of the back (where the wheel fits on the stub axle.)
Used to grease the front wheels weekly and kept pumping until clean grease came out.
