tiney o-rings in headgasket set for super.

Post by SvendH »

Hi there.
cant seem to figure out where they go,theres 8 of them about 11mm diameter square-sektion.the number sugests they are for the valvestems but there is also a set of stem-seals included like the old ones in "my" head.
Hope that makes sense!

Hi SvendH

The early Major cylinder heads had "O" ring type oil seals fitted to the inlet valves, the valve guides having internal grooves into which the seals were fitted. No seals were fitted to exhaust valves which resulted in oil getting down the valve stems into the exhaust manifold and being blown out of the exhaust. This resulted in Ford soon bringing out the modified mushroom type seals, and the instructions were to remove the "O" ring type seals from the inlet valves and install the mushroom seals on both the exhaust and inlet valves which cured the oil problem in the exhaust system. It is likely that your gasket set has included the "O" ring seals to cover all eventualities, although only 4 were originally needed.
