How to identify ..

Post by hanskik »

Dear all,

It might be a bit silly to ask a question like this to you all Fordson specialists, but I'm a newbie and rookie to tractors. So, hit me with all you have I can take it.

A dear friend of mine offered me an example of a little blue and white tractor of which I can say it's a Fordson Dexta family member. I've read this forum trying to find some answers of which I've found some, but not all.

On closer inspection of the engine, my friend said it was a Super Dexta model. So I've checked the numbers and I couldn't find a clue.

Please help me with identifying the right type of my little tractor. I will post a pic later. Elements wich could help you:
- It's blue and white, (original, not repainted)
- Headlights are on eighter side of the bonnet,
- It has an standard Dexta nose,
- Exhaust vertical and on the left side of the engine
- According to my friend, it has a super dexta fuel pump?

My question though is: could this be a 'new performance' model?

I would be grateful for any answer.

And o, yes I'm new. My name is Hans, I'm a Dutch Army Officer and I'm into Gypsy Horses and very small scale farming .... horse keepnig and breeding that is.

Regards and enjoy your day.

Hans,

Welcome to the Forum, you will find a wealth of information here which will assist you with any Fordson tractor.

Your tractor sounds as if it may be a hybrid, so it would be best if you could post some photographs taken from different angles.

You will find the engine serial number stamped on the cylinder block above the fuel pump. The tractor serial number is stamped vertically on the bell housing flange just in front of the clutch pedal where the inspection cover is on the bellhousing.

Early Standard Dextas were fitted with fuel injection pumps which were pneumatically governed, they have a copper pipe which connects to the inlet manifold. Later Dextas and Super Dextas fuel pumps are mechanically governed and are not connected to the inlet manifold. Whilst the pumps look to be identical the delivery stroke is different.

If it is a mechanically governed pump, check the number on the pump itself. P4588 is for a standard Dexta and P4696 is for a super Dexta.

If you require any further information just shout out on the forum and someone I am sure will be able to help you.

Gerald

Good day Hans, welcome to the board.

Silly? I don't think so.We all had to learn at some time...

When you say "super dexta pump" i take it you mean the mechanical one.
Because there is also a vacuum governed type.
This you can recognize by the vacuum pipe that enters a dome at the back of the pump.
The mechanical pump does not have this dome, but has a "pigtail pipe" at the back.
The type of pump will not tell you the type of tractor,as they were both used on Dextas.

Your best bet would be to find the serial number of the tractor.
Here's where to find it.
On the left side of the tractor (sitting on it) where the engine is bolted to the clutch housing there's a flange.
Right next to the little peeping hole that has a little cover.
The numbers are stamped in the steel, they can be covered in paint, grease, mud or a cocktail of these.
So take a steel brush and clean it up a bit and write down the number.
Then with the info here on the board you will be able to find out exactly when your Dexta was made.

If you have more questions, just ask.
Everyone here is willing to share their knowledge and experience, just browse through the forum and have fun!

Rob.

Gerald and Rob,

Thank you for your help. It turned out to be a succes (I think)

I've found my numbers:
Engine: 1538631 - so a normal Dexta engine,
Serial 09C 913116 - 1963 model year
gearbox 3E21 - may 1963 make. Grey/Blue paintjob

I guess it's one of the first mid 1963 Dexta's that got the new colors.

Cheers,

Hans.

By the sound of it you have a New Performance Dexta, export model.

Many people think that the Super Dexta replaced the Dexta but this is not true, they were sold as two seperate tractors right up to the end of production.

Dextas from 1962 could have been fitted with the Minimec Pump, definitly all grey and blue New Performance were.

Headlights on the outside of the grill were the norm for export tractors. You should have bars on the grill.
