Where does this fit on the brakes?
Where does this fit on the brakes?
Hi All. Having stripped the brakes down on one side I was looking through some spares catalogs including Emmark and Sparex and have seen this:
Sparex describe it as "DUST COVER-BRAKE Rubber Boot"
Does anyone know where this fits? I havent seen this during removal of the brakes or in the old parts catalog.
Does it fit on the back plate as a boot for the brake actuating cam shaft? We're hoping it may be a modern replacement for the spring and washer mounted on the end of the cam shaft that pushes on the outside of the back plate. The spings we have are destroyed.
Thanks
Rich & Eddie

It should be possible to source another spring - I got one for my Dexta from my local ag mechanic.EddieJ wrote:We're hoping it may be a modern replacement for the spring and washer mounted on the end of the cam shaft that pushes on the outside of the back plate. The spings we have are destroyed.
All the best,

That makes sense, I now remember seeing it on the Major page at Agriline. Same photo so i assume they are all sourced from Sparex and if they have it incorrectly marked for a Dexta most dealers probably followed suit.
Cheers

Help...
We are now in desperate need to source a couple of thes conical compression springs for the brake actuating cam.
Local NH stealer; Murleys in Warwick dont stock them, two other local Ag engineers havent a clue.
We enquired about getting them custom made but our cheapest quote was £85 for min order of 20 - we only want 2!
Currently we are fashioning a workaround solution but in the words of the 'Barley Pickers' we would prefer the "proper job"
This is the beast:

Thanks pottyperkins for the advice.
We got on to our local MF dealer (BRUCE HOPKINS Ltd in Hinkley) this morning who low and behold had some of the very same on the shelf at their sister branch in Long Buckby Northhants.
The image below is the old and new springs:
As they were only £0.51 we got four
Bensdextas shows a good image of them fitted, but as you can see there was next to nothing left of our old ones.
marlyman, most those parts on your image look like they are for a Major, thanks for the help.
Thanks all.

AFAIK they just keep the washer snug against the brake back plate, to cover up the gap around the rod & stop the dirt getting in. Crude but simple!
Hope your weather is warmer and drier than it is here just now

Ben
Thank you for the explination, I will have a look at the springs on mine over the w/end.
We have also been experiencing some strange weather lately. A lot of good soaking rain. There are areas in the north and south of us that are experiencing drought. This last w/end it was reported that snow had fallen on the very high peaks of the Drakensberg mountains which is a beautiful range of mountains that runs from the south through to the north of the country. Our temp for tomorrow where I live, is predicted to be 33 degrees centigrade plus rather high humidity. Isolated storms are also predicted later in the week.
Until next time keep well.
