Henk,
Sounds good
Many thanks for your suggestion.
Has anyone tried these?
Where can you get them in UK?

Speedi sleeves work very well. Have used them in the past with good results. Try your local bearing supplier. They do cost a bit though. The last one I purchased was for a Dexta rear axle and cost NZD80 (25-30 ponds).

Ben
Do my eyes deceive me or is that a crack adjacent to the keyway?

Jerry,
Good observation - Yes it is a hairline crack :(
I hadn't noticed it. Shows the value of the internet & digital cameras!
The crack is about 3/4" long and penetrates through to the keyway slot.
Does it matter? There should not be a huge load on the pulley, when in use. However, I can feel the crack with my finger, so it is likely to wear the seal quicker. Perhaps another reason for a Speedi-Sleeve?

Have you managed to find another pulley for your spare engine?

There is a lot of side load from the belt tension so you may find it has occured due to these stresses and may result in a catastrophic failure later.
Probably best to get it ground out and welded up IMHO.
It may also have been caused by a bad fitting when it was put on the crankshaft - look at the woodruff key.
I'm currently rebuilding a short engine from Agriline and that crankshaft has a long key rather than a woodruff key.
Had to buy some key steel at the exhorbitant cost of £1.00 for 12" so if you want some let me know.

Crankshaft pulley

Post by Bensdexta »

I just bought a good pulley with no cracks or wear marks from Malcolm Hipperson. Cost £10.

I was about to get my old pulley welded and fitted with a speedi-sleeve from this Co, who are very helpful:
www.bearingsandmore-Oxfordshire.co.uk

However Malcolm's pulley is cheaper!

I'm wondering if the 'spanner' I bolted to the pulley to undo the pulley nut puts an undue load on the keyway, which is clearly a weak point of the pulley. Maybe locking the crankshaft another way, such as putting the tractor in gear would be kinder on the pulley when doing up the nut? :?:
