Thermostart

Post by russelm »

Has anybody tried using a thermostart pre-heat setup on a dexta?

I have seen these in the past on other vehicles and they appear to work very well and thought it might be a good system for use on the dexta (and would simplify starting as you would not need three hands!).

Any thoughts anybody?

Yes it seems this can be done.
There is some discussion of this on the old site, eg:

See Brian's contributions - he can undoubtedly tell you more

i fitted the newer type heater plug to my dexta recently. i simply removed the old type plug and fitted one from a ford 2000 in its place. I then connected the pipe that goes to the inlet manifold directly to the new thermostart plug and then sealed the hole inthe inlet manifold. My theory was that if there was need for a shut of valve at the inlet manifold on the old system there should be enough diesel there to work with the new thermostart plug and thats how it turned out. There is other ways doing it, this way works well for me. You should also use starting instructions from later fords pre heat for 15 seconds then heat and start for another 15 seconds if it dosent start stop and repeat.

Thanks all

That might be an option then as the current setup is a little fiddly.

I happen to have a new spare thermostart plug in stock so will fit it during the rebuild (when the block finaly comes back from the machine shop!)
