Perkins in Dexta and MF: Interchangeble parts?

Post by farmer78 »

The Dexta and Super Dexta Perkins are named respectively F3.144 and F3.152 (correct me if I am wrong) and to my knowledge it should be very similar to the engines of the MF 35 called A3.144 and A3.152.

Is there any one in this forum that has an overview of the interchangability of parts for "Fordson-Perkins" and "MF-Perkins"?
I was looking for a new dieselfilterhousing.

Please do not use bad language like Perkins and M-F on this board! (Only Joking).

The engine in the Dexta was made by Ford and assembled from free issue parts by Perkins. It is easy to think that the two engines have a lot of interchangeable parts but this is wrong. Things like the engine block will fit but it is not the same. A complete M-F engine will fit into a Dexta but things like the liners are different.

As far as the fuel filter goes the Dexta one was a paper filter so has a different filter housing to the M-F as they fitted a cartridge one like the later Ford '000nd series. I am pretty sure it will fit but the pipes will need some modification. Watch out too for the direction that the fuel passes through the filter.

The heads are different as the MF one has an aperture for the fuel pump on the RHS and the end of the camshaft drives the tacho so there a hole at the end of the head.
Also the rear main bearing cap is bigger so it fouls the Dexta sump.

Bensdexta,
Thank you for your valuable input. Do you have a link to a seller of the spinon filter you mention?

See here:

Available both sides of the pond - got mine from Mayhill Tractor Parts UK.

I got two new bolts also which I shortened - be sure to get them the correct length or filter head won't seal or you'll strip the thread. That way I kept my original filter bowl c/w with bolts should I ever want to re-fit it.

Spin-on works a treat, better and much easier to change.

Hi folk
I stand corrected, it is the block of course that carries the camshaft etc so delete Head and substitute Block.
Thanks Les for pointing my error out.

Head can be used but there are a few extra bolt holes which needs bolts inserting into them to stop fluids escaping.
