hydraulic piston lip seal

Does it matter which way the lip seal goes onto the piston? ie with the lip facing towards the pressure side or away from it? I have just destroyed a new lip seal trying to insert piston into bore. I had the lip facing the pressure side as I thought this would be a better seal. However I suspect the piston will go into the bore if the seal is the other way round.

Any tricks to getting the seal / piston into bore without damage? I oiled it up before fitting, but its  err tight!

sound like you had it the right way. if you put it in the other way it will not work and the oil will pass straight past the seal.
Just use a small blunt tool ie welding rod and push the lip in to the cylinder gently working you way around the bore. If its the right seal it will go easily if you have it right

Thanks for info Scoobyjim
Thought the way the seal was logical given the direction of the oil pressure. I should get another new seal tomorrow so I will have another go and push the lip in gently, just worried about damaging it.

hi
the pressure should be behind the skirt to seal / oil side
so the easy way for the seal to fit is wrong :? if that makes sense :D

2nd attempt seal went in fine, sprayed it with some silicone lube and gently pushed the lip of the seal in with a screwdriver all the way round. Now waiting for so 5/8th bar so that I can make up a new position pin.
