One thing leads to Another!

Post by agroman »

Started by removing the hydraulics to sort out worn pin and bent linkage. Whilst it's off I have sent of fuel pump and injectors for refurb. Then removed fuel tank which needs sealing. Then sort steering box whilst tank out. Then split engine & gearbox for engine refurb and new clutch. I think I am getting carried away here!

Also I see axle trunion pin well worn - so another job, might as well do front spindles / bearings whilst I am at it! Plus numerous other little jobs whilst I am at it.
Interestingly I see one of the bolts has fallen out of the inner clutch fingers and mashed itself between flywheel and bellhousing, lucky it didn't crack it! So now happy that I have gone to the trouble of splitting it. :)

Hey, look on the bright side, by the time you've put all that lot right, when you get round to restoration there won't be much to do :run:
Best regards

Update so far -
Engine off at local engine specialist for rebuild , I haven't got time to do it all! Found gearbox main input shaft bearing was broken and had worn end of main shaft. Not sure if we can rebuilt shaft or renew it? I have heard of companies who can weld surface of shaft with like material and machine it back to true. Which ever it will mean stripping out the main shaft for repair.
There is damage to the gearbox housing. The 2 outer bolt holes for the instrument plate bolts were snapped out! So might as well get them welded up and re tapped now I am this far down the road.
Had 3 bolts from the RH rear hub holder studs snapped off, so have drilled and re tapped them, found someone on ebay who made up new studs - 7/16 unc one side and unf the other.
Now going to replace all the tin work. It is going to be easier and cheaper. Would be nice to keep originality but it would cost too much to try and get it looking good again, if you can find someone willing to take it on, as that degree of panel fettling is beyond my skills! Have only got an Agriline bonnet so far, but have to say the quality is better than I had expected. Still awaiting wings and nose cone is out of stock till next year!! Anyone know where to get a good one? I am reluctant to buy it until everything is back together So that I can trial fit it and make sure how good it is and return if needed.

Have just got the wheels back from sandblasting so next job is to get some oxide, primer and top coat on them.

Brake condition is very good, better than on some trailers / cars that I have done which were only a few year old. I have relined the shoes, cleaned them up and refitted.

I have sent many odd bits, linkages, pedals etc off for zinc plating. Not sure yet whether to paint over this or leave the plating. I have done other bits in the past and it is very resistant to corrosion and looks good!

Fuel tank has also been blasted. It's well holed on the bottom, but I have a rust buster kit to put epoxy coating on the outside and slosh inside, so this should sort this.
Currently rebuilding steering box with new top not and oil seals. It had been greased before. Next job is the front spindles. I have a repair kit.

I will get some pictures sorted and posted.

Interestingly I am at almost exactly the same point as you with my dexta - but I meant to get carried away!

My engine is at a local engineers workshop being re-built, as soon as its back I will be needing that thrust bearing - I wonder if its worth ringing FNH, I suppose we would need an original part number though ......
Oh yay, look, another seized bolt! Lets get a hammer.....and some kano.....and some cider!

I'd try and buy a 2nd hand input shaft.

Nose cones do come up on ebay. But as you say, good to try first, as alignment on some repros is poor.

I'd paint electroplated bits as they do oxidise eventually.

I had a patch welded onto the bottom of my tank - made a very neat job. If the tank is rotten prob not much fuel left inside, so should be safe to weld.

The outside of the tank has been grit blasted. I have filled the larger hole with chem metal. I will then cover the outside of the bottom with a 2 pack epoxy sealer. Treat the rust inside the tank and then use some slosh on the inside to completely seal it. Then re-spray paint.
I will put the plated bits back on and see what they look like and paint if necessary. I did some plating on parts on a horse box about 4 years ago and they still look good, and this lives out, the Dexta is def a house tractor now!
