I am having a nightmare trying to get the rear wheel nuts off. I bought a large clarke electric impact gun, not a chance.
2' breaker bar, scaffold pipe and big Tony from work Nope.
Eventually lifted end of pipe with engine hoist, that got 13 out of 16 undone before shearing the 1/2" drive on the breaker bar
As a last resort I have just ordered a torque multiplier from ebay' anyone used one?


What is the torque for the rear wheel nuts. Mine have been seriously over done.

Have you tried soaking with penetrating oil? And tapping with a light hammer?

Also gently warming with a blow lamp and let cool; do this several times with tapping also. Or if you want to be brutal heat, the nut well up then douse with cold water - shifts most things.

I did have the same issue, I just kept attacking it with penetrating oil and and bosch impact wrench, they did eventually give up! I didnt want to use my torque multiplier, because it will end up snapping the stud off

ihad the same problem trying to get wheels off a dexta which had lay out in a hedge
for over 15 years in our irish weather, i eveuntaly just gat a hammer and chisel
and they came off, bucthered the nuts but the threads were ok ,new set nuts good as new

Yes tried heat several times and plus gas, wd40 etc. and tapping.
I'll let you know how the torque multiplier goes when it arrives, hope it doesn't snap the studs. Looks a doddle on Youtube but everything does!

If that fails I'll have to destroy the nuts

Have you got an air chisel / needle gun ??

If so go round the flats again and again - it gradually breaks up the rust

If not two hammers and get as many opposite flats as possible...................

For wheel nuts I tend to pick up a cheap impact grade socket at an autojumble and then weld it onto its own bit of heavy bar or box

might not be good practice ?
but I'd use heat on one flat from my oxy /propane , then perfect fitting socket , ideally flat drive ( not a loose bi hex only just fits but not quite )

mine would be 3/4 drive ,breaker bar/ tommy bar 2 - 4 ft scaffold tube set up before the heat so its all ready
heat - downward push , load crack , one off two things will happen

when my mate has to remove the wheals from his low loader ,its a two man job, one on the bar / tube one taps/hits the end off the socket /extension to shock it ,with the 14 ld sledge .
very dangerous not really recommended , but it works when the stuck tight.

the heat /soak , expansion contraction should work , remember if ur trying to do it hot , the idea is the heat expanded the nut a thou so if ur slow with the socket there's no point ,if the heat had chance to travel to the stud , it will expand too , if u understand me same is true if ur all over the place with the heat /torch .

I had to take all wheals off my MF 65 last month , never been off all the time I've owned it , some were seized , heat straight off, then copper slip on threads when re fitted .

Prevention of tight wheelnuts = Copperslip or graphite paste coated on cleaned threads

A boating pal of mine swears by Stockholm tar which he uses on bolts, shackles etc on his boat, even the North Sea weather and salt water will not get past it, not tried it meself as I tend to keep the above pastes handy.

While on things stuck, the best thing for lubricating forcing screws such as on bearing pullers etc is tallow, still about in old ironmongers in candle form (minus wick) as a soldering flux.

I notice your tyres have a good tread, who changed the tyres?
I guess whoever did used a truck tyre impact wrench (1" drive?) to put those nuts back on.

Yes the tyres look new but I inherited the tractor when I bought the house so I have no idea how they were put on.
I'd never heard of a torque multiplier but it's the dogs nuts. Thank god for Americans and Youtube!

That looks like a very useful bit of kit

What sort of gearing ratio has it ?? (I'm assuming some sort of epicyclic gearbox - or is it hydraulic ??)
