my 58 dexta starts great ,she fires and runs sweet and uses little to no oil...she has good power, she reg pulls large link boxes full of wood out of a hilly/wet bog..so im just wondering why theres smoke coming out of the engine breather pipe ..any ideas chaps ?? :P is the engine needing a rebuild ? :)

Hello,

I think it is "breathing" i.e. some compression is being lost by passing the piston rings and escaping by the crankcase and oil breather pipe. It may be improved by giving the tractor a few hours hard work but if it's running as well as you say then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Regards

Ian

On the best new internal combustion engines, there is always some blow by around the rings.

Of course you don't see it as modern regs require it to be passed to the inlet where its then burnt but with a breather pipe it becomes quite obvious.

If its excessive then that's a very different matter!
