Steering Nut

Post by basewindow »

Quick question.

Is there a simple way to get that steering nut off the steering wheel?

Mine is seized, rusted and painted on. Can't get any leverage either.

Any suggestions?

Are you referring to the nut on top of the steering wheel?

If so plenty of penetrating oil and leave for some days.

If still no joy, try warming it gently with a butane torch or similar, taking care not to melt any plastic on the steering wheel. Alternate warming and cooling with cold water should free it eventually.

Gently tapping it all round with a light hammer is good also.

Mine also took a bit of shifting. Make sure you have the correct size socket on 3/4" drive, give it a good few taps, may need to use a bit of wood or similar to hold the steering wheel. I replaced my wheel, so wasn't worried about damaging it. Also had to heat the wheel and use a puller to get the wheel off the splines.

Thanks for the replies.

It's still causing me pain but I guess just like every other seized nut and bolt it's going to take time and patience. I'll keep working on it.

On the plus side I have all the steering arms apart and have replaced the ball joints on each end.

Guessing by the free play I'm going to need a new steering shaft and components. If I ever get that nut off....

It's off.

I took some work. Heat, lube, hammer and so on. And on and on.

Eventually got a mate to hold the wheel while i worked on the nut and finally movement!

No shims in there what so ever. A few ball bearings missing to.

Thanks for your help.
