Steering re-build

Looks like I need to re-build my steering.

Managed to get everything out the other day. The rocker arms look okay to me but the bottom of the steering worm on one side looks pretty worn.

Image

The other side looks reasonable.

Here is the rocker arm.

I am assuming these bits need to be rebuilt on the bottom of the worm shaft? Am I missing anything else why I have everything apart?

Image

Here's the top, is it still reasonable?

Regards,

Cam

That's by far the worst wear and pitting I have seen on one.

Hi,

is this a sign of water instead of oil in the steering box? What else could have caused this?

probably oil leaked out, bad seals, probably been outside in the rain or dew, from the weather, water got sucked into the gear box and then rusted I do not like leaving a tractor out in the weather, just my 2 cents,

Yes to all of the above. Left out in rain. Had no top cover or seal at the top steering. Bad seals on the lower. When I opened the box the first time was full of water and a crusty muck.
It's slowly getting some tlc.
So is this repairable do you think or should I try and find another worm and rockers?
Not much in the way of seconds available over here in Oz.

weld it, grind it, wire brush it, you have nothing to lose but bad steering, everything to gain

How do I replace the seals in the steering box?

Update for this.

Welded and ground the steering shaft.

Painted and put it all back together and it has reduced the freeplay to about 15-20 degrees.

I didn't weld the rocker arms as it was beyond my skill level. I guess this is where the remainder of the play is.

I'll see if I can live with this, if not I'll be looking for some good 2nd hand rocker arms.

Thanks all.
