water pump replacement

Post by terry274 »

Hi, I have a 1964 Fordson Super Dexta. The water pump has developed a drip out the weep hole under the pump shaft. I know this needs to be fixed, my question is are there rebuild parts (seals, bearings, etc) or will I need a new pump?
I suspect the answer will be a new pump, so question number two is where to buy the pump or parts? Who sells quality parts, not junk?
I am located in the United States.
Thanks,
Terry

ebay, alot of the tractor catalogs have fordson parts now, agrlineproducts.com in the uk they have fast shipping much easier to replace pump with a new one also have a rebuild kit
the drip means the seal is going bad, as for the bearings? probably not far

Terry,
In my Super Dexta adventures I found that most parts are made by the same suppliers no matter who you buy them from.
Check this out ( http://www.fixthatford.com/index.php?ma ... b9c407322e)
Ive bought lots of parts from them and have always been satisfied.

Uk parts are cheaper and a better selection but you have to pay shipping and what ever current rate to convert is, but you get new water pump for price of rebuild kit here in states.

Just to give everyone an update, I have removed the old pump and ordered a new one as well as a replacement backing plate. The old plate was made of fiber and worn through. The replacement pump should be here tomorrow, the replacement backing plate is already here.

Terry, you should have a thin brass backing plate as well as the gasket.
Hope the new pump works well - Mine did.

Ok, heres an update, it's not good. The new pump leaks out the weep hole. I have not even started the tractor, it leaks just sitting there. I contacted the seller and he supplied a return label. I then ordered a rebuild kit and plan on rebuilding my old pump. I have cleaned the housing on the old pump and am now waiting on the rebuild kit.
I see that the manual mentions a slinger behind the seal. That does not come with the rebuild kit. Does anyone know where to get one?

Got my rebuild kit. Look at the gasket.
Also, the seal is metal on both ends, and in the bore. I don't see how that could seal the pump.

It's a Tisco kit. Made in Turkey. I got it from Yesterday's Tractor.

If you don't get any joy from YT, suggest you contact Bertie Dunlop at Dunloptractorspares N Ireland.

A very helpful guy who knows his tractors.

Just to let everyone know, Yesterday's Tractor is sending me a new rebuild kit. The gasket was not their fault, and they are standing behind their product. I will buy parts from them again.

The new kit has a gasket that is shredded just like the other kit. I made a gasket out of some material I had from a previous project, that part is fine.

The first kit had an impeller that was not as tall or beefy as my original Dexta impeller so I used the original one. I really only needed a seal. I got it back together and the pump weeps out the weep hole. I thought at first it was leaking because I didn't use the thinner impeller until I looked at the second replacement kit's impeller. (The impeller presses down on the face of the seal). Kit number two included an impeller that was the same thickness as my original. The impeller in kit number two is a very rough casting, no where near the quality of the original Fordson part. But it's the same dimensions, unlike kit number one.

I'm going to monitor the coolant consumption and add coolant as needed. I tired of fighting this.
