Fordson Dexta Diesel oil leak

Post by jmw132001 »

First, let me say thanks for letting me join the forum! I am trying to find some more information on this dexta I have that has the 3 cylinder diesel in it. The engine runs great and starts perfect every time, does not seem to burn any oil, but I have noticed that I am losing engine oil from the underside of the pan where it meets to the frame. I took a couple pictures and hopefully someone can let me know if this hole is even suppose to be here, or if possible it has been messed up and that is why I am losing oil?

Thanks for any input!
Justin

Hi,

Welcome to the board. This could be a bad seal behind the flywheel. There are some dexta specialist s here on the board, who will help you how to solve it

Hi Justin,
As a start do you have a copy of the Fordson Dexta workshop manual? If not please send me a PM with your email address and I will send you a copy of the info I have saved on my PC. Failing that somewhere on the forum is a copy of the w/s manual but that can be downloaded. I will look out for it tomorrow and let you know.

Mervyn.

I do not have the full manual. I was only able to find parts of it. I also found out according to the numbers on it that it is a 1960 model. I am sending you a pm right now with my email address. I really appreciate the help! I am still trying to figure out this oil leak. I mean don't get me wrong, i just keep adding oil to it and she keeps going, but I eventually want to get it fixed but it is farming season and only tractor we have to work with so have to do what you have to do.

Thanks!
Justin

Justin,
Go to the Dexta Forum main page. Scroll down to topics. Scroll down 3 topics to Stefans workshop manual.
You can download the manual and more there.

IMHO that is the weep hole at the front of the bell housing so I gues that your rear main bearing seal is leaking. The oil has run into the bell housing and if you get oil on the clutch then you will lose traction. The solution is to (sorry to say!) is to remove the engine completely, remove the sump (it cannot be done any other way :( ) and renew the rope seal on the back of the rear main bearing cap. Not a difficult job to do just a lot of effort required for a simple job. The rope seal is available from a lot of suppliers.

Sorry for the delay in response. Needless to say i was changing out a rear tire and it fell onto my leg all 1k pounds of it because it was filled with calcium from previous owner. Anyway, I kinda figured it was a weep hole, but it looked like in a way something had smacked it as it was not too "clean" of a weep hole in turns of being drilled out or casted or how ever you want to say it..lol

Now my other issue is it seems it is getting some blowby and i noticed while driving with a 2 bottom plow on the back and it's up in the air and no digging, going in 3rd gear low, going through about 3ft tall grass it was "boggin" down. So now I have to try and figure out what is going on. Always something as I am use to it by this point in life. But of course, any suggestions on this would be helpful too!

Thanks again for all the help everyone!

No power=check the fuel filters Also One in fuel tap. Should not bog on such light load!

My thoughts exactly! I also noticed it was wanting to get high on the temp and then spit out some coolant through the overflow. I then checked the thermostat and took it out to inspect it. I went ahead and run it for just a little bit to see if taking the thermostat out was affecting the heating of it, and it does not seem to matter. The temp according to the gauge shows around 180 or so (guessing as the gauge only goes to 175 then all the way up to 230 and no numbers in between), but when it gets to that area, that is when the coolant spits out.

I am wondering if the cap is the cause of it as the actual thermostat I took out looked to be a newer one, but of course you never know. but with running it without the thermostat I do not think the thermostat was affecting it.

Also, seem to get a smoke coming out of exhaust which it did not do that before. So, trying to figure out exactly what the issue may be here as I do not have the extra money nor time to be down right now on the tractor as I need to use it as it is our only tractor we have.

Appreciate the help!

I also checked and bled the fuel system from the filter to the pump and did not see any bubbles or anything. I do not know.

sounds like you might have a bad headgasket  try filling the radaiator then with the cap OFF rev the engine vigorously several times,if the radaitor pukes large quantities of coolant the gasket is blown.Test should be made with the thermostat fitted!!
Take care, lets hope its false alarm!

I just did a rear seal on my 1960 Dexta. You don't need to remove the sump! Split the tractor, remove the clutch, flywheel and engine adaptor plate, and that will give you all the access you need.

Sorry for not being able to get back sooner to all of you that have been very helpful with this tractor, but it has been very hectic here and I just have not had the time to get online and talk.

So, I found a few different things on the tractor and think that may be causing the issues.

#1, the intake oil bathe that contains the mesh in it was literally completely clogged from the previous owner. i have no clue how the tractor even started let alone run. So, i was able to clean it all out, add oil to the bowl and I gained more horsepower.

#2. I have noticed lately that I am having a high idle issue and also it seems to want to rev really high at full throttle ore ven half throttle, so might be that the governer is not working right. I did clean the governor/diaphram thing on the side of the injector pump that has the nut/screw with the mesh, but did not seem to help the matter.

If I have the tractor at say 1/3rd throttle or anything and put the disc down enough to touch the ground it "surges" as in it gives it fuel and back offs, then does it again. After a while it eventually comes out of it.

#3. I am wanting to verify the temp on this tractor. According to the manual that I seen, it states something about a 180 or 190 degree thermostat, yet the temp gauge shows 175 is in the hot range. i am lost on this one here.

#4 Also on the tractor I have, it has only a single fan blade, meaning only two blades instead of 4. my question is, how can I add another blade to it to make it a 4 blade system to help with cooling here. When it is around 70-80 degrees she wants to heat up to around 180 or so degrees and you can tell it is hot, so I have to wait for it to cool off a bit and then start discing again. I notice some folks said that you could purchase the ford 2000 model 4 blade fan and it will bolt right up to the pump, but I do not want to invest the money on one and find out it does not work (also, can't really be throwing money at it right now as funds are drained pretty bad).

#5 I have also noticed that the 3pt lift wants to surge up and down. Does not seem to matter what position I have it in unless I put it all the way to the top, then the surging stops.

Sorry for all the questions and such, just want to try and save the tractor for this year until i can get enough money to split it and fix the oil seals and all of that.

Thanks again!

Have you got it in draft mode? There is a lever under the seat which switches it from draft (either fully up or fully down (simplified a bit)) to position mode (height of linkage is relative to where the lever is).
