Ford 5000

Post by ebak210 »

I have a question for you Ford-experts out there:

We most likely have to change the engine on a Ford 5000 tractor, I believe it is a 1970 mod, and I need to know which engines from other 4 cyl Ford-models will physically fit on my tractor. I will try to get hold of a used engine. Thank you.

The engine from 1964 through to the 10 Series should drop straight in. I would look for engines from the late 1970's which have a heavily ribbed block as engines pre 1968 have a different bore size and were only around 65hp. On the later engines a water filter/water conditioning filter would be an asset to prevent porosity in the block. I am sure you know that 50/50 antifreeze is needed to also help with this problem.

An engine from a 6600/6700/6610/6710 would be the one to look for, as they would be 256CID, same as your 5000. I believe that the 56XX tractors reverted to the 233CID, same as the early 5000.

Did you get an engine yet? Have a 1989 6410 engine in a 1965 5000 here, the turbo engines from a 7600, 7610 will also fit. If the head is ok on yours they should interchange as well. The later early 1990's 40 series power star engines can also fit, but need a bit of modification, haven't seen one done in the flesh so to speak.
