Post by woodcutter »

Hi starting a six cylinder major conversion, and I bought a sump it fits the d series engine but it's stamped fomoco on side anybody have any idea what it would have been used for in previous life, also what are my options regarding clutch can I just use lorry clutch and flywheel or do I use major clutch and flywheel it's a cargo lorry engine any help appreciated

Flywheel should be same, in tractor and lorry. Tractor´s 13" clutch is smoother to use. You should measure that sump, maybe it wont be suitable.

I've been told it will fit the cargo engine but there's a few bolts that won't line up on bottom of sump when bolted to major gear box, a backplate also come with sump so you could bolt d series engine into ford 5000 but I didn't buy that so il just have to have a go and fit engine and see what lines up I guess I've never done one before but I've got an old major with a broken engine so I want to get her going. So I may be back for more info cheers all

That Cargo sump may also be longer, than in Custom d-series lorry.

You were right mike the sump didn't fit it fitted a b reg cargo lorry engine but my 6 cylinder came out of a G reg lorry and there seems to be other differences to the water pump looks more offset and the oil filter housing is 3 bolt so looking at it I might scrap the idea and keep her standard, so I've got a upright sump and a raised oil filter for a older d series engine I would sell if any one wants it

Sure the Cargo motor, fits in Major. You have to modify, the oil pump suction pipe, and use electric fan.

Then you must also strengthen the tractors frame.

Yeah I was hoping for an easier swap and a bit less expensive as I can't weld aluminium so I would have to get a wedge cut off the sump and welded plus I didn't want to make the side rail go around the large oil filter, I wanted to make a neat conversion if I find a slightly older engine I may do it, I've got a major sat here with a tired engine bottom end gone I've got a cargo engine but I've also got a standard major engine fully rebuilt sat here which would be a nice easy swap Il probably go standard route thanks for your help mike
