Image hi all went to this years colac vic aus heritage festival was an Alice feature last year fordson next Landrover any way the attached was quite interesting one would think just another modded fordson as he thought when he got it but further research has revealed it to be one of three two wheel drive super sixes sent out on trial to compete with the chamberlains verified buy a former malcome moore who were the distributors employee he fitted the wider wheels b

Very interesting photo.
So County, merely turned the 'A' frame around to allow for the 6 cyl engine. (granted, being only a trial machine, it may have been more substancially manufactured if secessfull)
Being that it is only 1 of 3, I take it was not put into regular production as a 2wd super 6

I have seen that tractor before. I can't remember which tractor pull it was at but it didn't look right at the time and it didn't have the front weight and the A frame on it at the time. Personally I would want to see some documentation to prove it's origins before I believed the story that went with it. The rear wheels were definately welded with a strip of steel to widen them.

It is just too easy to drop a six in and claim it was something special IMHO.

Thats not a genuine county ,I have a picture in a book here of one .It has a nose cone like a normal super 6 and the front axle looks different and seems to be braced towards the rear of the tractor .Only three were made, one stayed in the UK and I think the other two were sent to south america .There is no mention of any going to Australia.Hope this helps, Liam.

Sounds like you have been reading the same article in the magazine that landed here in my mail box in Canada on Friday :wink: :) I wish I had one of those Countys, Or the parts where easy to get here :cry: I'd love to build a replica of it. I'm not a fan of that nose cone on the 4x4 county :eyes: but it looks totally different on the 2 wd for some reason 8) :D .
Who knows maybe there was a county dealer/ distribution center in Aus that did them in their shop to sell :idea: :)

Hi Robert I think we may be looking at the same picture in Classic Tractor,however I have a picture in a book here I got a few years back which is abit bigger .If you look at the plate where the belt pulley goes there appears to be a plate on it ,If it is what I think it is it will say county heavy duty gearbox , they reason I am thinking this is there was a super locally a few years back with this.It would be great to see some more deatailed pictures of it.Liam.

Hi Guys,

I found the link to the previous post where this tractor showed up. http://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb ... lit=ballan At that time it did not have the wish bone or the "Super 6" front weight.

I am also not convinced by the front weight at all. I can not find another photo like it anywhere and the script on the front is wrong. All counties had a small s the same as all the other letters in all the other pictures I could find of super 6's and super 4's. Scripts and logos are usually a strictly controlled corporate thing and for the larger S to suddenly appear and then dissappear again is not at all logical. I smell a fake here. I just hope no one gets sucked in and pays a big price for this tractor.

Hi guys,

I know a bit about County and I would not bet my money on it either. :?
But the owner did make a nice conversion by himself with the front weight. :D

I gota agree with you guys, I would have to assume if it was the real McCoy it would have both the gearbox tag and a ID tag identifying it as a two wheel drive. The front weight also looks to me like it was fabricated from flat stock and welded together, and I’ll be the first to admit that it was done very well, but the corners look to sharp, not the bigger radius and slightly rough as mine is.

I know of two Wheat belt mechanical work shops in West Australia which many years ago converted both Fordsons and Chamberlains to Ford 6cyl they were at Quardaring and another place, Merridan I think.
One of the guys served his time at the Dagenham plant in England, so did know a thing or two about these models, he has been to my place and had a look at the Super Major that I am very slowly doing, he said that they used to extend the fuel tank into the battery compartment and fitted the batteries to the side rails, I am not keen to do this myself and plan to make things as un noticable as possible, he also said that they used the later models for the conversion because they had stronger axles, I think he was meaning the change of rear axle that seems to have occurred in the Power Major when they changed from a slot in the outside end to two drilled holes.
This guy sold me spares for various Fordson over the years in the local Ford dealership covering the 70's through the 1990's he is retired now.
Another thing I am surprised that no one has commented that the front casting on the 6cyl pictured seems to be a Power Major one, but the front pannel and bonnet is Super Major.
I have seen a 2 wheel drive 6cyl on a comercial CD he stated that there were three made and they were green in colour
I don't believe the one pictured was an original proto type, firstly the model parts are mixed and I find it hard to believe that they would reverse the A frame, given all the options open to them.

I'm fairly sure this tractor was the one sold at a Bacchus Marsh sale a few years back and at the time nothing about it added up to it being county. It didn't have the county transmission badge on the side of the gearbox and it didn't have the bigger air cleaner necessary for the bigger engine. The radius arm was also missing. So it could have been converted new to six cylinder by some local firm but very unlikely by county.
One of the three converted tractors was sold in England and one went to mexico which can be seen working in Stuart Gibbards county DVD and the other I don't know. It may be in Australia somewhere but who knows.

I worked for County Tractors from 1968 to 1971 in the sales department. They made what they called the 952, a two wheel drive 6 cylinder tractor. I only saw and drove the one built on the Ford 5000 unit. The idea was to make them for South Africa and Australia, where Ford Dealers had requested such units.
I tested and drove the 952, ploughing with it, and it was a very nice unit. However for some reason it appeared , Ford disapproved of it, so it was not made in any quantity.County then went on and made the 852, which was the first turbocharged Ford 5000. Again this time Ford bought some units and then took over production, buying the first few hundred kits from County.
