Wishbone position on 6 cylinder Majors

Post by Brian »

I came across this on tractors with 6 cylinder conversions at a show in Yorkshire. I post these pictures to emphasise how not to do it! In my humble opinion these fittings are an accident waiting to happen.

I have mounted the wishbone in this position myself without problem but used a more substantial plate and the original pin.

Those mounts were extremely dangerous!! :eyes: . Good thing, is they never did that to those fordsons in our area :D. Here the problem on the fordsons is their "38" rims(it looks like the "38" rims were standard for fordsons in the Philippines), made the tractors lean slightly toward the front. The farmers managed to make a solution by modifying the tombstone so that they could put the front axle of a david brown tractor, two of the tractors fitted with that modification looked nice!!!! :D

But, the newest trends on ford 5000s around here are:

the external double-acting cylinder is directly connected to the DAR valve by means of a pair of extremely long hyd. hoses, and

the front axle of the 5000 is turned around and the a-frame is mounted exactly the same way as that. Except, of course that the plate was thicker that those in the picture . they do not use the original pin but they would use an EVEN LARGER PIN!!! :D

I know what you mean about the small pin, this seems to have been a carry over from the N model and kept, so that front axles could be interchanged, from my quick observations there is very little difference to the mounting holes sizes or their position from the N to the Power Major, but by the time the first Super Majors came about they seem to have realized they needed bigger pins to reduce the wear on these pins and bushes, they even decided to fit a grease nipple!

I have a Malcombe More E 27N loader and have decided to fit it with the bigger pin even though it is not original.
