Tacho cable 1961 Dexta

Post by kiwiland dexta »

The engine end on my cable has deteriorated and stopped working, recently bought a repro part that did not fit as apparently a change was made in later production. Anyone have any ideas on sourcing the original fitting or other options please?
Pic shows the original versus the bought part.

Could it be they send you one for another type of tractor? Looks to me as a Major type.
Kind regards, Henk

The type is common to quite a few tractors, including apparently the later Dexta. I might have to get creative with that old cable.

I have a 64 Super Dexta and my cable looks just like your existing one.

Interesting!
I have not been able to find a local supplier, one UK based business wants 45 pounds for one like the original - seem to remember someone once saying they were able to build up the worn end on their original, the fitting it goes into seems fine when I put the tacho end into it, snug and does not turn unlike the worn end. Have to see what I can achieve with solder or suchlike.

There are different fittings possible, you should take the measurement and compare them with the ones they are selling.
On angloagriparts they have a few different sizes listed for the dexa. Also worth looking at the parts for the major.

I’ve vague memories of using splinters of wood to pack between the driving square/socket. Worked for years.

Love it - you should be a Kiwi!

Thanks Mathias - I will keep my searching eyes tuned.

Following up this thread, there are numerous business specialising in reconditioning instruments and making cables for them - I have been quoted approx $40NZ to make a new cable. Easy!

Hi, I suggest you give "Bundy Bears Shed" a call he is up in Queensland Australia. He sells tractor spares and may be able to help you. I just love watching his You Tube videos on repairs/restoration to tractors. He is such an interesting gentleman, you will love his videos.

Kiwi, just getting back to your Dexta, are we looking at a mechanical or pneumatic pump where your tacho cable drives? I have the mechanical Simms pump and the end of the tacho cable fits perfectly, I bought it from Agriline Products in 2005, and the part number is 5242, Dexta Tachometer Cable.

Maybe change out the cable to the old housing?
