Fordson Serial Numbers and Production Dates |
This page will list the serial numbers and production dates of the Fordson models. The Dexta and the Super Dexta are treated in detail below. The Major is described in detail in this document by Brian Dye. See Fordson Stories for an interesting example of the problems that can arise with dating a tractor!
Serial number locations
- Fred Schembri was kind enough to send me a scan listing the locations of the serial numbers of all the Fordson and Ford models from 1917 until (approximately) 1980. You can download it here (203 KB).
- See below for the detailed locations of the serial numbers and casting codes of the Dexta and the Super Dexta.
- See this document (.pdf file, 1.4 MB) for the serial number and casting code locations of the New Major.
General listing of serial numbers and production dates
- For a listing of the serial numbers and production dates for the F, N and the E27N, click here (Adobe .pdf format, 1 MB). Many thanks to Brian Dye for providing it!
- In addition to the locations of the numbers, Fred Schembri also sent me a general scan listing all the serial numbers of the Fordson and Ford tractors. You can download it here (295 KB). In my opinion the information listed in this general scan is useful as a rough dating guide. For the Dexta and Super Dexta, see below for more detailed information (note that the data in the scan match roughly with the detailed data below).
 The Dexta and Super Dexta
Dexta's were made from 1957 to 1964, while Super Dexta's were made from 1962 to 1964. All Fordson tractors have the following codes on them:
- the serial number, located on the flange between the clutch housing and the engine, on the left side of the tractor, stamped vertically on the edge of the flange where the bolts go through;
- the engine number, located on the left side of the engine near the exhaust manifold;
- the clutch casting code, located on the right side of the clutch casting;
- the gearbox casting code, located on the right side of the gearbox casting;
- the hydraulic lift casting code, located underneath the seat;
- the rear axle casting code, located on the front side of the rear axle.
The following table shows the serial numbers of the Dexta and Super Dexta, and the corresponding year of manufacture:

As you can see, the serial numbers for the Dexta and Super Dexta were in the same series. The serial numbers always increase (sometimes with a large gap), except in the second half of 1963. This means that the prefixes are essential in dating some tractors. It's unclear to me why this sudden drop in serial numbers occurred.
Paul Coster was kind enough to send me an email with the end of month vehicle numbers from January 1962 to February 1963. Notice that the data Paul provided aren't always consistent with the data presented above. Anybody who can shed more light on the sudden drop in the second half of 1963 and/or the deviations between my data and the data Paul provided is encouraged to send me an email!

The casting codes have two formats. Until 1963 the code consisted of a letter indicating a month, a number indicating the date, and a letter indicating the year, e.g. A21A indicates January 21, 1957. From 1963 onwards, the code consisted of a year number, a letter indicating the month and a number indicating the date, e.g. 4A21 indicates January 21, 1964. The ranges were as follows:
