Every time I crank Bessie up water shoots out a one place at the water pump. I put a new gasket and some sealer and it just keeps on. A more specific idea is on the left side right in the middle between the bolts. There appeared to be tiny nick but it is way to minor to cause the problem and the new gasket and the really great sealer would have stopped it if it weren't deeper. Any ideas?? I was going to order a new radiator if that was the culprit. Thanks ahead, Robert Ps. 1955 new major. IP: Logged |

Robert,Is it possible that you have the wrong water pump fitted? From what I remember the later version had a slightly different (larger) outlet port. regards Brian IP: Logged |

I didn't change the water pump, it came with it. Just acts like its not pumping the water where it should. If it weren't pumping at all it wouldn't come out with such force I guess. I'm thinking I have a stoppage somewhere. I was going to flush the system but afraid all the flush will come out the side. I may remove the bonnet and radiator next weekend if I get some time and strip the front off so I can see in the holes the pump, pumps into. Maybe run a wire through, like roto-router man does. Could the thermostat be stuck? Still shouldn't push the water out the side of pump. Do you happen to know the degree setting for the thermostat in the major? I guessed about 220. Maybe wrong but most diesels we have here run to about 180f. before overheating. Thanks RobertPS: Sandy MacFarlane is a saint and an asset to this forum. IP: Logged |

Robert,The water pumps on the early and later engines are not interchangeable between engines and the gaskets are also different as the ports are not the same. This could account for the water not circulating. If you had a jammed thermostat then water would still circulate through the thermostat bypass port unless this too was blocked by either the gasket or the wrong pump/block combination. This would cause a build up of pressure but not to the extent you are experiencing. I think I would remove the radiator cap and see what happens when the engine is run less cap. If you still get a pressure build up then you will have a clearer idea of where to look. regards Brian. IP: Logged |
