What is the proper torque for the head bolts? My I&T Manual says 80 to 90 lbs. but that seems a bit light.Thanks. John G IP: Logged |

Hi, I have to do a cyl. head retorque after engine overhaul-would this torque be the same and is there any other tricks I should know?? Also rear main starting to leak oil after engine hot( I think after reading some my helper cut seal off to short. I think it should have been left about 0.015 long? Does this sound correct.) I am using a heavy duty straight 30 wt. oil. Thanks for any insight into this problem!! Tractor is a 1961 super major.Best Regards Mac

Mac, Headtorque is the same when ever you do it.I tend to leave the seal about 1/8" proud on both sides. You can replace the lower half in the sump but it is nearly impossible to replace the top one without removing the crank IMHO. ------------------ Kind regards Brian IP: Logged |

[QUOTE]Originally posted by BrianHello Brian, I don't suppose I can get away with just replacing the lower half of the seal and stopping the leak?? I know what you were saying about trying to replace the upper half without removing the crankshaft, if I remember right a few tool companys made a upper seal removal and installer tool but did not work out very well!!! This tractor runs real nice other than a few oil leaks. But the rear main oil leak is really playing with my mind just can't get over cutting the seal to short when rebuilding the motor!! Thanks for all your help!! Sorry for the long reply been trying to replace the patio deck on my house before the up coming holiday and it has been in the 90's everyday this week!! Mac,Having to work on the patio is no excuse, even if it broke when you drove the Major over it to get to the front lounge to overhaul the engine !!! Replacing the bottom seal might help if you left that about 3/16th long and used plenty of gasket sealer around the join. ------------------ Kind regards Brian IP: Logged |

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Brian: Hi Brian, and thanks for the fast reply! after I get the patio and now upper wood deck over the three season porch replaced!! Due to wife pulling off bad wood while fordson mechanic repairs cement on patio,I hope she did not hear the part about me driving the Major over the patio to get a beer(I mean fix the engine) Leaving the lower half of the seal real long and lots of sealer I am assuming will make up the the top half being short and then shrinking after engine being hot and then cold??? Thanks again for all your help!!!!!!!!!Best Regards Mac IP: Logged |
