G'day and Happy New Year to all from down under.

It's been a while since I wrote on this forum as I haven't done much to the old '63 Backhoe, but I have received my taco after waiting about 10 weeks (That's a story in itself but no use whinging) and have had some problems fitting it so I thought I'd let everyone know.

The new anticlockwise taco is much longer than the old one and because of the new position and length of both the fasting bolts and the light with the long power pin at the rear, it would not allow the instrument panel to be mounted as it the hit the fuel tank.

I had to cut one of the securing pins and cut the light holder as well as bend the pin in order to get the panel to sit flush.

What surprises me most of all is that the manufactures didn't make sure that their product would at least fit on our tractors.
But like I said no use whinging just get on with it I suppose.

Kind regards....Dom

Sorry, disregard the date on the photos

Hello Dom,

I also have experience that a few times. Also the part suppliers are some time a bit careless.

By the way, I’m still looking for a taco on my 57 New Major. That’s the model next to the dashboard. If anyone in Holland or Belgium has one for sale. Please let me know.

Regards Henk

Ok the taco doesn’t seem to work for some reason. The taco needle moves if I spin the cable by hand but not when I screw it into the back of the pump.
The old pump and taco did not have a cable connecting them so I don’t know if something is missing from the back of this reconditioned pump or could they have sent out the wrong cable?

The end of the taco cable looks like it's square but inside the back of the pump seems to be round. Could this be warn out?
Appreciate all replies.

Thanks ....Dom

Hi Dom,

Looks like the drive in the back of the pump could be worn.
I suggest you connect the drive cable to the back of the pump but leave the cable disconnected from the back of the tacho. Start the engine and see if the cable is turning and, if it is, can you stop it by lightly gripping between your fingers?

If its not spinning or you can easily stop it, then the female square drive, in the back of the pump, is 'shot' and needs replacing.

If it turns OK, then probably your tacho is the wrong direction of rotation.

Regards,
Mike

I had the same problem with a new taco on my power major. On my taco i removed the two small screws on the back and turned the taco insides round 180 degrees and put the screws back, it then fited fine . Regards andy.

Dom,
Same happened to mine. You will also find the original light bulb holder will not fit where the new one is. You can either use the new one and change the wiring or slightly grind out the hole to accept the original bulb holder.

G'day GT

I have made up a complete new wiring loom anyway so it was much easier to connect to the new light.

It looks like the back end of the pump had worn out and is now round. I'll have to think of some way to fix it or look for a replacement part which I reckon will be impossible to find out here.

Kind Regards......Dom

Dom,
My tacho drive was also rounded out. I made a small adapter that was held onto the outside of the drive with some very small grub screws. On the other side I drilled then filed the square hole for the cable. It was a bit fiddly but it worked. There was no way I was pulling the injector pump apart to fit a new drive.

GT, I know it's unlikely but you didn't happen to take any photo's or have a sketch of what you done. I'm sure there would be a stack of owners that would have same problem.

Getting a photo is no problem. Getting it on the BB is. I seem to be having trouble. I posted some in the miscellaneous section the other day but I can only see a little white square. Have a look and see if you can see anything. I'll take a photo even if I just e-mail it to you.

If you email me photo's I should be able to display them on here for everyone to see. That will give you time to work out how it's done. I tried for a while and couldn't do it either, so I finally gave up and let my then 12 year old daughter set it up for me in about 5 minutes.

Looking forward to receiving those photo's and kind regards............Dom

Here are the pics with message from GT

One of the beast without a wash

Looks like a very handy lady GT

Here are the pics of the mod I made for the tacho drive.

All I can say is "Why didn't I think of that?" I'll give it a go GT, the hard part will probably be filing the hole square. May take a bit of patience.

The picture site I use is called Piczo. Just brilliant so far. Will allow me to display up to 250 pictures for nix.
Thanks for the photo's mate.

Kind Regards......Dom

G'day all

Finally got the tacho working over the weekend thanks to GT's photos. Works perfectly. The engine seems to idle at about 600 rpm and the max. seems to be 1800 rpm. Is this about what it should be or does something need adjusting?

Kind Regards ........Dom

Dom, me boy,

Brian says "DON't move it!" so don't b***dy touch it! OK?

I know you have an I&T service manual, so look at page 36 of FSM section, paragraph 121 and Fig75. Idle is about 550rpm and unloaded max is 1800 but the confusing point is 1925 rpm for New FSM.
Can't wait to see this yellow hunk when you bring it down here to your farm.

Regards,
Rick

No worries I ain't touching anything
I'll be down your way tomorrow Rick but unfortunately I've got 2 more things to finish off - Power steering & either the old generator or an alternator, so I won't have the beast down there yet. I hope its been pouring rain- Sydney’s pretty wet.

Regards......Dom
