Hi guys,

As the Dexta does not have a dipstick for checking the hydraulic and gearbox oil levels what is the guideline to make sure that I have enough oil in. I don't want to over or under fill.

Regards,

Barry

Barry,

There is a small square headed level plug screwed into both the axle and gearbox casings. Close to the PTO selector lever on the axle and by the brake pedals on the gearbox. With the plugs removed add oil until it runs out of the holes.

If the oil level is above the holes, it will pour out. Getting the plugs in fast enough can be a challenge.

Hi Oscar,

If it's above the level then I should let it pour out, to much oil is just as bad as to little!! so I'm told!!

Barry

Hi Barry,

Not sure if that's true for gearbox and rear axle. Yes, if you top them both up then you'll be in trouble. But the level definitely has to be above the plugs! The correct quantities that should be in there are listed on the main site (check the Dexta owner's manual there) and are as follows:
-engine: 7.25 litres including filter
-gearbox: 13,1 litres
-rear axle: 19,3 litres

You'll find that these quantities put the level well above the plugs.

Oscar

Oscar,

So what you are saying is that there is a way, by means of the plug, of knowing if you have enough oil in, but no way of knowing whether you have to much in??.

Can anyone confirm whether to much oil in the gearbox and hydraulics is harmful in any way.

Oscar can you remember when the last oil change was done on the Dexta, perhaps I should be looking at an oil change and therefore can control the amount going in.

Regrds,

Barry

Hiya Barry,

The Dutch equivalent of Brian (i.e. someone who has literally spent his life servicing these tractors) put in the exact amounts I mentioned when she was overhauled about 8 yrs ago, and I have not added anything since then. So it can never be too much. She hasn't done a lot of hours since then, so the oil's quality should still be fine. I don't see any need to change the oil or to take oil out of it. Provided the level is above the plugs, I'd leave things as they are.

Oscar

Barry,

Most Dexta's in this area were used on trailers and loaders. It was pretty common to overfill the rear axles to compensate for the oil that went into the extra hydraulic rams. I have seen them running happily with two to three gallons extra in there.

The simple way to check the oil is the way Fords recommended. Open the plug with the tractor on level ground and allow the oil to drain out of the level holes til it stops.

Problem is then though that when the oil is exactly at the level, you never know if you need more in.

Having seen the oil level in your tractor from the inside it is only slightly over the plug. I would leave it alone.

Kind regards
Brian

Oscar/Brian,

Thanks for your recommendations regarding the oil level in the hydraulics, can I assume the same goes for the gearbox??

Barry
