Re: Tractor won't budge.
Okay, it's been a while since I've posted, but we've been busy. Time for an update. We've managed to split the tractor and remove the transmission. Some previous repair had been put together using RTV silicone instead of a proper gasket, so we had to improvise a puller to get the plar\te off that ho...

Re: Duals... What are your thoughts?
I have a set of duals for my 57 Major. I love them. They spread the weight over more surface area. More contact area with the ground. Also keep the tyre on top of the ground more, so your driving along the ground, not with single wheels where you have to drive though the loose ground. Didn't notice...

Re: Duals... What are your thoughts?
Brian, I am completely unfamiliar with Molecage wheels, so I can't even fathom what you're talking about. :scratchhead: Can you post a picture? Joe Nevermind... A few minutes with Google yielded some good pics. Looks like they could be a more affordable solution than full dual wheels with rubber tir...

Re: Duals... What are your thoughts?
I have zero added weight up front, so I can't remove anything there. I've often wondered if the Major is overweight, as the present configuration is how I bought her. For reference sake, yesterday, I used my uncle's Allis Chalmers D14 with a single 8ft disc, while the Major is laid up to work up the...

Duals... What are your thoughts?
Clueless new to farming questions... The ground I need to work up and plant is very soft, loamy and damp. My rentor runs triples on his big Versatiles to keep afloat. I've been stuck four times this summer so far. It's late July and I still can't disc my field without digging myself in a rut. At pre...

Re: Tractor won't budge.
Ok... To be on the safe side, I want to replace all three bearings on the main shaft and lower shaft. We're gathering supplies to support and split the tractor very soon. I have the Repair Operations Guide as well as the I&T Shop Manual. The only problem is I have no idea what part numbers the beari...

Good find! I've been wanting to make a spare key since I got my Major, but could never find the right blank. This helps immensely.

Re: Tractor won't budge.
Found where the metal chunk came from! It's a bearing... or at least it was. I was giving everything one last look before I put the old girl back together and filled her up with fluid when I saw something shiny at the bottom of the sump that I missed before. I pulled out an extendable magnet and pul...

Re: Tractor won't budge.
At least it was not a bit of anything hardened Joe - no wonder you couldn't move judging by how much it had deformed :scratchhead: You have no idea how relieved I was that it wasn't hardened. It could have done some real damage. I missed wishing you stateside wavers of the scar strangled spanner a ...

Re: Tractor won't budge.
Update! Today, we pulled the tractor to the garage, drained the fluids and started removing covers. Once all the covers were removed, we started moving gears with the hopes of seeing what's binding. While looking through the side pulley hole, we finally saw the problem. A small piece of metal wedged...

Re: Tractor won't budge.
This model is not live drive (I wish!). Do I have to split the tractor to get to check these links, or can I access them through a cover plate? I don't have a repair manual, so this site is my best hope for information.

Tractor won't budge.
I just got done prepping everything for an evening of haying. The New Holland 273 was hooked up to the E1A Major and I headed for the field. I got everything running, made one pass around the field, stopping occasionally to adjust the baler. I stepped on the clutch, put the Major in gear, slowly let...

Re: Power Major and disk
The Kewanee has 40-16" disks and the Major has calcium in the tires as well as the full compliment of wheel weights. She's quite heavy, and pulled the disk pretty well last fall through the weeds in 4th gear. The field was left with soybean residue from the year before, but has set untouched, growin...

Re: Power Major and disk
Matt, what size disk is this? Last fall I bought a Kewanee 130 tandem disk (11.5 - 12 ft) for a song, hoping my E1A Major would pull it. I churned up some weeds last year (lots of fun, made her grunt), but this year will be the ultimate test. I have a field that was plowed up last fall (sandy, loamy...

Re: First time plowing. How'd I do?
Actually, the coulter was too high in these pictures. Apparently, the clamp was not tightened enough and it had worked its way up from the upward force. I noticed how it was not doing it's job and tapped it back down where it belonged and tightened it much better. It made a much cleaner cut a...

Re: First time plowing. How'd I do?
Interesting question Brian, but I'm afraid you're asking the wrong person. Whereas, I've driven industrial equipment for years, making tractors an easy adjustment, I'm still new to actual farming. I'm reading plenty and learning as I go, but his is the first time I've ever heard of skimmers. Perhaps...

First time plowing. How'd I do?
Nestled back in the weeds on the side of the hill was an old Case 3-bottom trip plow that my wife's father used way back when he farmed. It's been sitting in a rusting heap for many decades right where he parked it, and has managed to escape the scrap man. I recently cleaned it up, lubricated everyt...

Re: Hydraulics query.
Thanks for all the responses so far! Lots to absorb. BTW...My dad just reminded me that I have an uncle, who's FMD has a hydraulic pump mounted on the front to power his backhoe. I presume it runs off the crank, or such, which would lead to full-time live hydraulics. I may have to zip on over his wa...

Hydraulics query.
Earlier this summer I used my FMD to disc a field. The disc (Kewanee 130) was raised via hydraulic cylinder. This was no problem, so I assumed everything was well. As it turns out, I have a mower conditioner (John Deere 1209) that needs a considerable amount of hydraulic pressure to raise. I cannot ...
