Fitting tacho/hour meter

I want to add a tacho/hour meter to a 1957 Major. Can I fit an electrical meter with a magnetic pulse recorder ( not sure exactly what that really is) to the generator? If so, any suggestions on the type of unit needed. Or do I fit a cable drive unit to somewhere on the engine? If so, where does it ...

Brake drum seal

I have replaced a broken brake cable on my 1957 Major and there is a minor oil leak behind the brake shoes. How big a job is it to replace this seal while I have the wheel off? Do I need to remove the brake extension housing and can this be done with the rear wheel just leaning away from tractor or ...

Re: Loose hi/Lo selector lever

Found engine number on the flange behind the starter. Same as what is on the tag in front of battery. https://i.postimg.cc/Xpx8XXGf/4-B5-B6-ABB-13-ED-4-E41-95-A2-F17-D361962-BB.jpg I couldn’t read the number on left front wheel housing but the right side looks like 11 J7F. I am getting oil coming up...

Re: Loose hi/Lo selector lever

I couldn’t find a serial number on engine block. Is it on right or left, near anything distinctive? Here are some casting numbers in pics. https://i.postimg.cc/SYQhymvC/21155989-10-C6-445-D-837-E-FED1895-DC739.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Kk2bHP79/9-D33911-E-9-CA4-4-E3-B-B6-B6-62-DBB2754-F69.jpg https:/...

Re: Loose hi/Lo selector lever

I finally persuaded the pin to come out. Looks like someone tried building it up with weld sometime in the past. I will add some more weld to it and grind it down to fit (hopefully). I ran the lever over a wire wheel and it has never been filled in. Looks very original. You mentioned casting numbers...

Re: Loose hi/Lo selector lever

Thanks Sandy, how in devils name do I get that $(/; bolt out? Do I really need to get it out?? Maybe leave it as is? I guess if it gets to the stage that the lever is no longer holding on the shaft, then it might just fall off🙄. Now that I have worked out how to load pics, I will take a few tomorrow...

Re: Loose hi/Lo selector lever

Thanks Sandy The range lever is beside the throttle lever and looks just the same only about 90mm longer. The play is definitely between the lever and shaft. There is no gap which would indicate that it is a clamp type lever. If I could get the lever off, maybe I could get a clamp type lever or modi...

I am trying to remove this lever as there is waaay too much play on the shaft. Everything I have tried so far has not worked ( even undid the nut).
Any one got a good method to try??
Cheers

Re: Flushing gearbox and transmission

I have read that diesel can affect o rings/seals and kero is a better option. Have you had any problems with diesel and rubber?? I guess that the diesel would not be in there very long and might not have time to cause issues?? To get the hydraulic top housing off I would need to get an engine lifter...

Re: Flushing gearbox and transmission

Thanks Emiel,
I guess I was hoping for a quick fix for now😩 but I just might have to bite the bullet. Do you know if there any seals/gaskets/o rings that I should get before I start?

Flushing gearbox and transmission

I drained the oil from gearbox and transmission today and both were very creamy colour and the transmission filter was clogged with gunk. Is it OK to use a mix of oil and kero to flush out both sections? I have 20 litres of 85w/140 gear oil and 20 lt of Tractran TF-10 which is 80W oil that I have no...

Problem with diesel injection pump

I have a 1957 Major on which I have just had the diesel injection pump overhauled. I put it together today & can only get fuel spurting from outlets 2,3 &4. Outlet 1 (nearest the radiator) produces no fuel at all. I lined up the timing marks on the flywheel to 23 degrees & when I checked through the...

Re: Cannot start the Major

Did some work on the old girl today (tractor I mean). Fuel tank filter is clean. Lift pump was gunked up with a sludge & has now been cleaned. Both fuel filter have been removed & checked. There was no obvious water or rubbish in either. I removed the side cover of the injector pump. Seems like a fa...

Re: Cannot start the Major

Sorry, I forgot to mention that it is a diesel engine & the fuel I put in was definitely diesel. I will try some of the suggestions today & let you all know of the outcome.

Cannot start the Major

Hi everyone, I was slashing yesterday afternoon when the Major started to over rev. I pulled the stop button but since then I have turned the engine over as normal but there is no sign of a start. It sounds just like it is out of fuel but I put in 20 litres just before doing 30 minutes work. Last we...

Rebuilding an engine & lubrication

Hi all, I am about to reassemble a New Major engine & am wondering how to fill the oil gallery with oil as I assemble it. I could not remove the brass square headed plugs at each end of the block & I have been advised that this should be OK if there have not been any metal filings in the old oil (wh...

Oil Gallery plug thread

I have pulled the engine out of my New Major & I am trying to clean out the oil gallery but cannot remove the square headed brass plug at each end of the engine block ((Part # 358063-ESD Plug (Cylinder block oil gallery)-standard)). I have tried a few gentle taps with a hammer on the plug to loosen ...

Some progress

I have finally managed to remove the pistons which were not seized quite as tight as I thought they might be. A few taps with a shaft of wood from under the piston & out they popped. A home made liner puller remover the liners quite easily as well. They are quite corroded where the sealing ring goes...

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I have removed sump, radiator & cylinder head so far. Pistons still look like bad news. A couple of questions. Is there any way I can remove the piston rods without removing the crankshaft? Can I remove the crankshaft at this stage or do I need to split the tractor to achieve this? Should I pour som...

Siezed engine on a Fordson Major

Hi, This is my first post here so any help would be appreciated. I appear to have water in the sump of my Major & last time I used it it was spewing steam from an engine vent. I stopped it as the engine was getting progresively slower, but now it does not turnover at all with the battery. I have bee...
