Starting to look like a tractor again

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/davidbate/paint6.jpg The fuel system was a nightmare. The rack in the injection pump was rusty and was worn because it had been running dry. The 1st new lift pump had the wrong angle on the lever inside the block and would'nt operate. We fitted new injection p...

Rebuilding the rear end

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/davidbate/KFDpaint1.jpg We made bushes for the top lift arms where they fit onto the square section rocker to take up play. Found new small bushes for the top lift arms in dealer's stock. The plates that support the drawbar to the rear axle were worn, drilled ...

Rebuilding the front end

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/davidbate/KFDpaint4.jpg During the re-assembly I decided not to fit the starting handle shaft that goes through the tombstone - I had banged my leg too many times walking past it  Also the radiator shutters were rusted out, and I could not find a decent s...

My mistake, meant the seal at the front of the crank. The gasket for the timing gear cover was a problem - it leaked twice. We bought new gasket set but not all were perfect fit/size.

The rear end

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/davidbate/KFDstrip8.jpg As you can see once the paint and crud was removed, every oil seal leaked, so had to be replaced. The bottom of the gear lever was built up with weld and ground down to original shape. The whole clutch unit was replaced. The half shafts...

The front pulleys came off to change the timing chain when we stripped the engine down. Actually the whole block was taken off the tractor to do the rebuild and fit the liners. Are you doubting my "total rebuild" ? You hav'nt seen the invoices for parts & labour yet - almost had to remortgage ...

Stripping down the KFD

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/davidbate/KFDstrip5.jpg Although it ran, it was in far worse condition than I originally thought. A total nut & bolt restoration was required. No2 piston & conrod were in terrible state, so all new sleeves & pistons. The head had been fitted with wrong valves ...

KFD Major mudguards & rear wheels

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g303/davidbate/KFDwings.jpg The rear mudguards were distorted through the tractor tipping over, and rusted out. Stormont bought the original style mud guards off Ford, which came in 2 pieces, the tops seperate to the sides. They cut them down to reduce the height. ...

KFD Major - the differences

Stormont Engineering in Kent (southeast England) was one of the 4 Ford/Fordson dealers in that area. The 4 dealers formed a company KFD = Kent Ford Dealers who needed lower & narrower tractors for the hop fields & orchards. Stormont carried out the conversions in their workshops. All 4 dealers reta...

Hi Kev; There are dozens of Majors in this paddock, some running and many not . They convert Majors into 6 cylinders and use them for haymaking. It is almost impossible to get anything out of there now - my KFD68 orchard Major came from there 3 years ago. My blood and tears fertilized the grass :lol...

This guy had found a set of drawings of the front axle Roadless made to fit larger diameter front wheels for working in boggy conditions. Fabricated a replica axle and fitted to his DDN. Note this is NOT a 4wd front axle.

Hi Eric; Long time since we last corresponded about Leopards. No one has found an original one here since I "discovered" them in the Tildesley archives in the early 1980's. But a few have been "manufactured" in recent years using engines from buses etc. None look exactly the same as the original tho...
