Re: FMD Starter problem.

Morning Sandy, I was just guessing at your location because of the two years dry! I expect other places besides Oz get like that! All I know about this raised PTO is that it is a Fordson job. has the casting code. Hope to get that tractor home in next day or two , get it flushed and fit this . All t...

Re: FMD Starter problem.

Yes, Sandy, I will flush it a bit with diesel in a garden sprayer but make sure to mop it out! Re cost of raised PTO, are you referring to what I wrote in the PM to you? Did I typo?... it was Cheap.... Are you in Oz? Have mates up near Gympie, and a best pal who died, down in Surrey Hills are...

Re: FMD Starter problem.

Good morning Sandy, Yes, was expecting NAPA to have a variation of circlips. Pleased about the raised PTO as it wont shake the guts out the Kuhn rotary rake when I get it fitted. Nice on slasher too, no nasty stuff happening when picking it up off the ground anymore. And rotovator! That Super has mi...

Re: FMD Starter problem.

Good information Gents! I have fixed a good few starters, its just that I have not had one apart with the clutch plates in there! I suppose when you get at it it will be straightforward enough if needs be. Will check connections first, but wound up going to town for circlips for a TEA -20 PTO, but t...

Re: FMD Starter problem.

Boy, I Hope its a wiring connection problem Sandy! I will try the jump leads to a good battery. that sounds a very good idea. If clutch Was slipping, what would be the symptoms? The "wheeze" only lasts a second or two, no sound of anything spinning in starter. In all these years, I have never had th...

Re: FMD Starter problem.

Thanks for the ideas, It just struck me as odd if connections would be worse when warm than cold.
Will get a look tomorrow and report back!

Thanks again to all!

I put on another good battery and its just same, Sandy.

Mathias,
Not sure what Mass connection is, but will check them all and see.
V good clean connection onto starter I know for sure.

Thanks you both, will keep you posted!

Richard.

FMD Starter problem.

Gents, Firstly thank you for all your tie and help with the external hydraulics on the Power Major. Now if I may, another question; My Power major starts really well when cold, but if it's been running , the starter just "wheezes" and won't turn over, Or, barely turns over a half turn in a sluggish ...

Re: Power Major and external hydraulics.

Thank you all for the replies and ideas. Re the vee rake, its a real joy to use as the swath is even in thickness and the full width of the baler pickup. This model seems easy on tines. Not broken any yet this year but only raked 80 acres up to now. I tried the inlet side plumbed into the valve ches...

Re: Power Major and external hydraulics.

Sandy, Thank you for the clarification! Best Richard. Mathias, Am a bit foxed by your question my friend. The PTO is not connected to anything when raking. The rake is a simple Vee rake and the times are turned by contact with the ground. No power to them at all, and hydraulics only used to raise th...

Re: Power Major and external hydraulics.

Good morning and thank you for your time, Emiel. Yes, the rake is a ten wheel Vee rake, ground driven. Hydraulics are only required to raise both wings for transport. Would you say that connecting the input to the valve chest in this manner is better than the connection I am currently using, under t...

Re: Power Major and external hydraulics.

Sandy, Thank you for the picture. I see this outlet now! Can you tell me how it works, as in, do the arms have to be raised all the way and the lever pinned, for this outlet to work? Not at all sure what you mean about the PTO disengaged when using hydraulics. I was meaning when hydraulics not in us...

Re: Power Major and external hydraulics.

Apologies for slow reply! Been raking and baling. Dave's Rusty Parts has it figured as the way this works at present. Emiel, I see no port that could be used on the valve chest. A super has such a port, but can't see where I could plug in on this Power Major. Again, I have no trailer port as far as ...

Re: Power Major and external hydraulics.

Good morning Emiel,
I have one lever, and no tipper hydraulic, so plugged the inlet hose into that plug under the seat close to the lift arm casting. The outlet side is connected into the filler plug behind the lift arms.

Thank you both for your replies!

Rich.

Power Major and external hydraulics.

Gents, I have to press my 59 Power Major into service for raking hay. (JD hydraulic pump went kaput within ten minutes of starting raking.) Can you tell me if I need to pin the lift arms lever in the up position to use the auxilliary control for the lift on the rake? Its a one way valve on this vee ...

Good evening Tim, Thanks for explaining all of this to me. I am better versed on the Fordson Major, (New Major) and have three of those. The code sounds like it runs in the same manner. I had no idea on the "STD 4.3 " stampings. Thanks for that! I will pass the information on to him, and also have a...

E27N serial number.

Morning Gents, I am trying to help a pal with his E27N; He was looking for the serial number, and it isn't on a plate on the firewall. There Is a number stamped (not cast) on the engine block where it joins the bell housing. This number is 1178994. Does this sound right for a serial number? On the a...

Welcome Ken, and I do enjoy your history stories! Have a good mate who bought quite a few traction engines over there, and hauled them back to the UK for re-builds. One he picked up from a nephew of Ned Kelley. it was down in the swamp where they gang used to hide out. He lives in NZ now, (Tapawera ...

Re: Going ploughing

Bob,
A set of spring-tined (pig -tail) harrows on a diagonal would have sorted that straw out.

Even if it was wet, a couple of passes would level it out a bit.
With my trailed plough straw like that would be murder!

Re: Going ploughing

Well, That looks some serious kit, the mouldboard looks like a converted battleship! I'd like to have seen it "slipeing" better, (Turning over) but the furrow looks like a good drainage ditch so it is getting the job done. You could certainly bury all your troubles with it! Neighbour on farm in the ...

Rick, I've thunk about trying it, but that's as far as it goes up to now! The vinegar won't rust or eat iron or steel, but the object will rust afterwards if not washed off and oiled. Re: 57 major

Molasses does eat the rust for some reason but is slow, for faster work, normal white vinegar works, (I use it in old Very bad gun barrels and on tools I find in the fields rusted up and such like!) I wouldn't use it in an engine block though, as it will eat out all the rust, and this will leave beh...

Re: Super Major Hi-Lo transmission won't shift.

My high/low on the FPM was gummed up so wouldn't move for a start.

Someone had used Linseed oil (!!!!) in the gearbox and rear end, and it had gummed everything up.
Not likely your problem, but maybe worth asking if the Hi-Lo shift feels slow and stiff?
