Re: Super Major Compression
Steve, When I rebuilt (including new sleeves) my Super major I had the same problems, slow starting and loads of white smoke that would burn the eyes. The compression was 330 psi with very little variation between cyl. Imformation I gathered from a diesel forum stated 300 psi was the absolute minimu...

Re: faulty throttle
Brinky and all, By all means if you get the rack unstuck, check and or change the oil in the injector pump. I worked on a Dexta pump recently, had stuck plungers and rack, with plenty of rust. The owner did not know he was supposed to check or change the inj. oil. While getting parts at the injector s...

Re: super major engine surging help
The drain plug is on the side , level plug just above that. Can be filled with a oil squrt can but is easier to fill through the side plate. put the auto trans fluid in and run about 10-20 min.and drain. Do this several times increasing the run time each flush until satisfied. At this point, if it's...

Re: super major engine surging help
Check the condition and the oil level in the injector pump, They often get neglected. I have seen a few that were righr rusty and worked okay after flushing with auto trans fluid several times then fill with engine oil.

Re: oil pressure trouble...
On the two Fordson engines I have rebuilt I checked the relief pressure before instaling the pump, Major and Super Major, I found the oil pressure relief valve spring to be weak. I replaced the spring and made an aperatus to test with air, checked and shimed as needed. on the super I put air on the ...

I also chose to leave the o-ring off. When I pulled the valve apart there was no o ring . I was able to purchase a new one from a New Holand-Ford dealer, but after reading Brians instructions in wiki I decided to leave it off,the o ring caused noticeable drag. I am sure without the wiki instructions ...

hydraulic problem-glyptal peeling in hyd. chest
I am in the process of replacing the piston gland and roller on the linkage along with the o-rings on my 1963 Super Major, found the screen plugged with particles of glyptal paint that pealed off the inside of the housing. It had scratched the cylinder,I suspect .006 - .008 inch will clear up. Is th...

Re: Oil from Exhaust Elbow
Shazbat, I am thinking it may have sucked oil out of the air cleaner(seperator cap off the intake, rain water) or possibly from the crankcase breather( to much blow by) . Both of thes would leave oil on the inside of the intake hose between the air cleaner and manifold.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Double clutch doesn't work
Hi Arjan, I agree with Dandy Dave, using a bush hog, without a over run clutch, I have unstuck the PTO clutch disc on a Ford 600 by getting the bush hog over a large sapling or small tree with the hydraulics raised push the clutch in to release the PTO and lower the hydraulic. A less drastic ...

Re: lack of power
I do not think my Majors would pull that load up much of a hill in 6 th speed either, The blow by at the dipstick if not a stoped up breather line :D , indicates stuck , broke or worn rings. :( My 63 ford 5000 ( super major ) has 365 PSI all clyinders, newly rebuilt , engine has not been run in yet....

Re: Running on 3 cylinders -super major engine
Nick, Sometimes when you have stuck plungers you may also have other serious pump problems ( rust ) that you may need to address, if you do not see any rust on the control rod and forks You might try to free the plunger by trying to work the fuel control rod, may require some light taps applied to t...

Re: Rebuilding an engine & lubrication
With a socket adaptor and drill motor you can prime the oil pump, fill the filter and circulate oil , by spinning the auxiliary shaft, this is done prior to installing the rocker assy and timing gears. Even doing this I would still use assembly lube.

Re: Fordson Supermajor hydraulic problem
I feel certain that your problem is either the unloading valve or the hdraulic piston gland /cylinder. For it to leak down that fast I would suspect the unloader valve to be stuck in the open position, if you find this to be the cause I would also inspect the lift cylinder and gland while you have i...

Re: Cylinder head bolts
David, that is a good practice, however it will most likely be necessary to first run a 27/64 drill bit in the hole till it bottoms out. You do not want to remove any metal, just clean the crud out , then the tap. The head bolt threads are 1/2 x 13 NC. I did this on mine and found about 1/2 inch of ...

I found a picture of the Inertia starter in The New Super Major Operators' Handbook. It is in the options and accessories section. It does not look anything like the one on e bay. Other than not displaying any hose connections the e-bey starter appears very similar to a hydraulic starter . The hyd. ...

Thanks for the compliments Dandy Dave and Henk and glad to be aboard. I bought this 1953 Major as a very rough non running tractor. The block was split between cylinders, tried to weld it up the weld looked real good but the crack just kept spreading towards the crank main when it cooled down. bought a 1957 engine and rebuilt also went through transmission. It is a ve...
