Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Hello everybody, Well, Dex appears to be running really well now I've got her drinking diesel. Really clean burning, not a whiff of smoke, and running a little cooler than on petrol (I suspect because the engine, and therefore the water pump, is running at a proper speed). On with the mowing, and th...

Mechanical govenor injection pump oil level plug
Hi folks, Can anyone tell me what is the correct size of oil level plug bolt for the mechanically governed Simms fuel injection pump on my Super Dexta? It seems some previous owner has bodged an overlong hex-head screw (seems like it's metric, too), complete with washer, into the hole and it's leaki...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Chaps, I feel terrible about this, and hang my head in abject shame! Quite how I managed this, I can only guess. I apologise profusely for having wasted peoples' time, BBS hard drive storage, and general internet bandwidth. I relinquish my "Not Quite Blue Yet" status for "Less than Numpty". It turns...

Re: Dexta Hydraulic nightmare
Hi Ted, As far as I know, there is no OEM part to replace draught control link. It might be worth giving Agriline a call, and also Patrick Edwards in Bampton in Oxfordshire. How about a local tractor breakers? I nearly had a similar problem -- the plunger was rusted to the end of the link. Fortunate...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Hi Mark,
Well, over the phone the mechanic reckons it's what you guys have been telling me all along: a fuel issue. He's coming out tomorrow, so I'll report back. I'll bet that either I've overlooked something stupid (most likely!) or it's the injection pump. I sincerely hope the former!

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Hi Mark, Thanks for the suggestions. My local tractor mechanic advised me to check the tappets as well as the fuel bleed-off from the injectors. Tappets were all a bit tight, but resetting them made no difference. I checked for a blocked bleed-off pipe by slackening the banjo bolts on all three inje...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Hi All, Well, I'm now at my wits end. I've ruled out a blocked tap (by by-passing it), blown compressed air through the tank-to-lift-pump pipe which seems free, and cleaned out the lift pump and fuel filter heads and associated pipes. Still the same old white smoke, loss of revs, and general uneven ...

If it was the head gasket, I'd expect the problem to not be so intermittent. Wouldn't you agree?islander wrote:Take a compression test...could be head gasket.

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
A quick update on my quest to fix my low revs and white smoke problem. Sorry I've taken so long to re-post: I took the fuel tank off my SD to remove the fuel tap and replace the gauze (see previous picture). I took the opportunity to strip and repaint it while I was at it, replacing dash lights and ...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Thanks for all the info! I attacked the fuel tank, and took out the tap. Here is the likely source of my problem, I think! Time to order a new gauze, and have a look at the tap diaphragm (there was a small leak before).

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Hi all, Just a quick update. I took my injectors out and had new nozzles fitted to each of them by a professional tractor mechanic. He verifies them as good. I refitted them and took my SD out of the shed today. Though the engine now sounds much crisper, the unevenness is still present, as is the wh...

Re: SD Tacho -- clockwise or anticlockwise?
Hi,
Well, that's strange then. Someone must've put a clockwise tacho in at some point. No wonder it doesn't work! Minor issue currently though, as the engine's playing up big time.

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Hi guys, An update on my fault finding process: 1) I took the air cleaner apart -- dirty, yes! In the garage (clean air), I started her up without the air cleaner attached. Problem not solved! 2) With the bonnet off, I could get a much clearer picture of the injector side of the cylinder head. With ...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Thanks, all! I phoned my local diesel shop today who suggested that I should be thorough about making sure my fuel system isn't blocked. I have a fuel pump repair kit, so I figured I might as well use it. Does anyone know if there's an online manual for the later mechanical-governor type fuel pump t...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Thanks for that. Just looking at the Sparex catalogue for new injectors. Their offering (http://v2.nz.sparex.com/ItemDetails/Ite ... ility#Tabs) doesn't look like my injectors. What gives?
Cheers,
Chris

Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Hi All, Dex, my 1963 Super Dexta is poorly! The other day when I fired her up, she suddenly stopped. Out of fuel, I thought, but apparently not. Having restarted her with a completely full tank, she ran well for a bit but then developed an unevenness in her revs and started producing quite a bit of ...

Re: Happy birthday to me
Hi John, Good to find another Kiwi Dexta owner. I have a '63 Super Dexta near Palmerston North. Using it much as you intend to -- topping the paddock, and general maintenance around the block. Mine appears to have been imported by Belcher of Pukekohe, and came with the Belcher FEL. It's a slow proce...

Re: Auxiliary service plate gasket
Hi,
Yes, I believe it's common to quite a few models of tractor using the same auxilliary plate. Norwoods in Palmy seemed to have no trouble in sourcing one when I overhauled my hydraulics.

SD Tacho -- clockwise or anticlockwise?
Hello all, I have a question about a 1963 Super Dexta tachometer: currently mine appears to be the clockwise type, but has stopped working. It seems you can get new tachos easily enough (even in NZ!), but all the catalogues are telling me that SD's use the anticlockwise type. I'm hesitant to buy an ...

Re: Hydraulic Lift Problems
Hi Craig,
Have you checked out the fault finding section of the workshop manual, Section 8? You can download it from this site. I found it quite helpful in diagnosing a fault with my hydraulics -- actually it turned out to be a worn pin in my case.

Re: Dexta Hydraulics
Hi All, Sorry for the long silence! I'm actually in the middle of reassembling my lift cover, having finally got it to pieces. After I had: 1) freed the Qualitrol yoke which was rusted onto the plunger -- lots of penetrating oil and a breaker bar 2) pulled the spring seat off the plunger -- well sei...

Re: Dexta Hydraulics
Hi Nick, No pics yet (I'd like to get everything cleaned up before I take my camera near it), but I can confirm that the source of my hydraulic issues is the usual problem with the position control cam follower pin. Really worn, just like the many photographs available on the web. Now if I could jus...
