Here's another view, which shows the other side of the coil.

Strange it should go wrong after 60 odd years of reliable service.

Re: Temperature mystery

Thanks Sandy. It doesn't have a gear, the needle spindle is simply attached to the coil and turns when the coil expands/contracts. Pic below is now on Postimage. https://i.postimg.cc/J7ydDjwY/Dr-ger-temp-gauge.jpg But I get the point, I could turn it. I did the glass of hot water test with the probe...

Re: Temperature mystery

Well, this is the mystery. It worked fine for decades and now reads about 30C below the correct temperature. The idea that it works or doesn't led me onto the track of a dodgy thermostat. It works through a coil connected to the capillary tube that expands and contracts according to the pressure and...

Re: Temperature mystery

A bit late but just to top and tail this, as I'm now back from this summer's cruising. Before I left, I took out the gauge and tested it in a glass of hot water and found that it did work but read about 30C below the actual temperature, which was a big surprise as I was thinking it either worked or ...

Re: Temperature mystery

Downloads of manual, all done. And I'm probably done here too. So thank you all, and you Sandy, particularly, for your code-cracking skills. It's always a good idea to know what engine you've got when ordering spares. Now I do ! I'll post again to top and tail when I've sorted out the thermostat. Me...

Re: Temperature mystery

The contemporary tractor pump is SPE-4A 70S 380 That's exactly it. I know it well as I blew the seals on the Rhône 12 years ago and ended up going backwards with no engine before being rescued. I even bought a spare pump from Peter Slater in case it happened again in a dodgy place. It's waiting in ...

Re: Temperature mystery

http://www.globaledit.co.uk/fordson/thermostat_earlier_current_.jpg That is stunning, Sandy, thank you very much. I have a Ford 'Parts List for 4 & 6 cylinder industrial engines' that came with the boat which has a hand-written note on it from the previous owner saying 'type 592E'. So I've always t...

Re: Temperature mystery

http://www.globaledit.co.uk/fordson/left_right.jpg Sorry, these are really poor pics, but the best I can do for the moment. I can't see under inj. 4 but I'm pretty sure from dates and other info that it's not an EBRO. Can't see enough of the starter flange but there is nothing obvious on what I can...

Re: Temperature mystery

http://www.globaledit.co.uk/fordson/water.jpg Sandy, do you mean including the sump or just the lower block? Left, right and front views? Pics above show the raw-water cooling outlet. The strong one is when cruising at about 1,000 revs. The dribble is when the filter is getting nearly blocked, but ...

A few views of the engine that may show whether Mark 1 or Mark 2.

And the strange number where a serial number's often found.

Re: Temperature mystery

Sorry, Sandy, I didn't respond re serial number. I've looked in all the recommended spots (and elsewhere). The 'blank' under injector 1 has the engraved number R-60534, which doesn't correspond to any of the listed formats. I'm guessing that it's a number put there by the 'marinising' company which,...

Re: Temperature mystery

Sandy, that's rather scuppered several questions I had, but I'll ask them anyway as they may help me understand a few things. Elsewhere in the forum, it is said that the temperature stamped on thermostats is the opening temperature and not the fully open temperature, which is about 10C more. Is this...

Re: Temperature mystery

Many thanks for the replies. A few clarifications. John b. The coolant level in the heat exchanger is fine. It's the raw water passing through it that was partially blocked. Emiel and Billy26F5. It's a capillary type, so no electrical connections. It's not the original Fahrenheit one. It's a Dräger ...

Temperature mystery

I have a 592E four-cylinder diesel engine in my boat. I am currently chugging along French canals. For 10 years, during summer cruising, my temperature gauge has read a little above 70C once completely warmed up. This year, since I set off in late June, it has read just below 60C and stayed there. A...

Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer

And after all that, it wasn't anything to do with different pump plungers, changing the timing, marking pulleys etc. How stupid is this? It turned out that when the pump was replaced last summer the plate on the drive coupling had slipped somehow, which accounted for the bolts being at one end of th...

Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer

Yes, got that, thanks. The front pulley is 7.5in diameter (the manual also says 7.5in or 190.5 mm). The circumference then turns out handily to be almost dead on 60 cm (59.847), which gives an arc length for a degree of 1.66 mm (600/360). So 23 is 38.33 mm and 26 is 43.33 mm. So once I've got TDC, I...

Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer

That's great, JC. Many thanks. Marking the pulley sounds the way to go as the engine is deep in the boat and you need a mirror to see through the inspection hole. I'll report back.

Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer

I think that's the problem, JC. The 70S pump has been replaced with, effectively, a 75S. The following is from the July 1959 manual supplement (Major/Power Major): ______________ Pumps incorporating 7.0 mm. diameter elements, type No. SPE.4A.70S. Pumps incorporating 7.5 mm. diameter elements, type N...

Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer

One more question.

As there are no marks on the flywheel and nothing else to go by, Is it possible to work out what the current setting is, perhaps by turning the engine to BTDC on #1 cylinder and . . . and what?

Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer

Thanks Nick and JC. While I'm digesting the 'Pat link' discussion, a quick question. The SIMMS injection pump is a 70S, i.e. with 7mm plungers. It has been reconditioned and the 7mm plungers replaced by 7.5mm ones. I've read elsewhere that this would make a difference to the timing setting. Is this ...
