Re: Diesel Super Major Barely Turns Over / Won't Start
I run two 12volt batteries in parallel. I have two suppers and both have the same problem. I have even used new starters from Bareco, but in the end two batteries in parallel works best. Kind regards.

Re: Power Steering
I put it on myself, and it was really easy. The only problem I have is that the loader frame sits to close, and can pinch the hydraulic lines at times. I put a block of wood on one side of the axle and it keeps this from happening, but limits the axle play on that side. It does help with the loader ...

Re: Power Steering
I put it on my 63 super and it works fine, except when the loader is full. It doesn't have much power, and is not built very heavy duty, but it is power steering. When I have a full bucket it wont turn going forward until I move a bit. I was really hoping to have a more powerful unit.

Re: forson super major - OIL COMING OUT AT EXHAUST MANIFOLD
The engine needs more time in the field. Even broke in engines will produce something like oil from the exhaust when cold. If I remember correctly, the major engines do not get hot enough, until they are put hard in the field. Some people will remove their thermostats to assist with this problem.

Re: Excessive Pressure in cooling system
The fins in your radiator may be plugged, not allowing the cooling to happen properly. (may need "rodding" if you can find someone, or just replace) Please verify that proper flow through the radiator is occurring.

Re: I thought all fordson Major's had decompression levers
That's one weird question: My Fordson Major Diesel has been having a lot a problems with the new brakes not functioning properly. -please explain what is not working with your brakes... First it won't stop and now it won't go. -?? It's as if there's no compression but there's no decompression lever ...

Re: Super major brakes
Hi woodcutter, I had the same problem twice in the last few years. The first time I had it, I left it alone and it heated up the brake assembly red hot (would melt your shoe) for weeks on end until the pad wore down. Has been fine ever since, but I didn't like the solution. The second (more recent) ...

Re: Knock in No1
One more follow up. I had the original injection pump rebuilt by "Tom Bittner" from Stateline diesel -http://www.dieselstateline.com/. He was highly recommended on some of the other forums. It was rebuilt in August of 2007, and I think I paid $700 US. Not sure what he did wrong, but he sure sent me ...

Re: Knock in No1
Update - 3 I put some time in on the tractor this weekend. While she has smoke after starting, once I ran her it took about 8 minutes the smoke completely cleared!! At this point, I think she is completely dialed it, no smoke, and no knock! Only took 10 years to diagnose... To recap, using and old i...

Re: Knock in No1
Update 2- Decided to troubleshoot the diaphragm on the older injection pump. I purchased a new diaphragm and replaced, however the engine still ran ragged, with lots of smoke. After examination it looks like the injection pump diaphragm case has been damaged. There is a small cavity in one side whic...

Re: Knock in No1
Update - I spent quite a bit of time on the old girl yesterday. I was able to mount the old injector pump (spe 4A 70 5296) on her and fired her up (still timed in a 23 degrees). Started right up, but lots of smoke. "No knock!" that I could hear, but again lots of smoke and sounded a little off. I th...

Re: Knock in No1
Thanks Shepp, I have adjusted the timing many times, and tried many settings before and after 23 degrees. I even modified the adjustment claw, so I could go a little further than it would allow. All of these adjustments did not make the knock go away (some of the advance setting did lessen the knock...

Got it, Thanks Shepp! I never would have known that the pump was not original. That could account for a lot.

Re: Knock in No1
Thanks for the reply Shepp! More good ideas, for me to think about, here are my answers: 1) Yep, only happens on #1, slack on the other pipes doesn't reduce the noise 2) Seems to be a deeper knock, and coming from the engine, not the pump 3) Tried many injectors (and moved from one cylinder to anoth...

Re: Knock in No1
Thanks Brian! One more clue - knocks heavy when at idle, and not so much when revved. Also when the engine gets warm, the knock goes away some (about 1/2 as loud, but not all the way gone). 3. Worn cams in the pump would make it less likely to knock. Have you taken the injector out and put it on the...

Knock in No1
Hello all, I have a knock in the number one piston that I can't seem to get rid of (1962 fordson Super major - Simms pump) Appears to be fuel related, because if I loosen the No1 fuel pipe, the knock completely goes away. (I have been working on this problem for the last 10 years and still have not ...

Re: Photobucket
The trick is to have control of your data. This means backing up the entire forum on some interval (maybe once a month). Ideally the site and all of its pictures are backed up. Then you can always feel safe in case of blackmail (which is what Photobucket is doing now). Another possible step, If poss...

Re: Hydraulic pump bolt backing out
Thanks OEhrick, Good ideas. Not sure if I can, or want, to drill into the crank and bolt, but you have a good idea. I think I will take the pulley off and see if I can mate something to it. I have been looking at the things designed for the 8n tractors, and I might be able to modify one of them to a...

Hydraulic pump bolt backing out
Hello all...I am working on my 62 fordson super major, now trying to mount a front hydraulic pump to be used for a loader. This pump and loader were on the tractor for years and worked fine with no issues. I rebuilt the engine about 6 years ago and never put them back on. I now have need for the loa...
