Re: Fordson major front loader
You probably don't have power steering, you'd want to add it or add a _lot_ of weight off the 3pt hitch. I have a hoe on the back and loader on the front of my 55 and it steers like it's a feather, take the hoe off and run just the loader and it takes both hands pulling on one side of the wheel and ...

Re: Major blocked rad??
Don't forget a couple of other things.. Worn water pump won't move enough coolant to keep things cool and (more to your description) a blown head gasket (or damaged on install etc) will blow compression gasses into the coolant and your rad will, as you describe, blow fluid out like mad.. Boil over w...

Wet exhaust
Did search, sounds like maybe oil but wanted a more educated answer and you guys are the place. 55 New Major Diesel with a 59 Power engine... Was doing a bunch of slow backhoe work, probably about 1/4 throttle.. Notice the tractor smokes a little more at this speed but black/grey smoke. When I was d...

Re: Alternator fitting
Not true Pavel! Pretty well all the SI units will output 1/2 their rated amps at 1600rpm, and that 1600 is alternator RPM, -not- crank. With typical pulley sizes used that's somewhere between 500 and 800 rpm engine crank.. Feel free to include your source, here's mine. Greg http://www.delcoremy.com/...

Re: Alternator fitting
You can also get a true 1 wire alternator, AC Delco.. I just put one on, was about $90 plus tax (70 amp I think). It comes with a v-belt pulley attached, is pretty easy to make a mount for and only has a single wire to the positive battery post, no need to run a switch wire etc, won't drain battery....

Re: cleaning the outside of a radiator?
Agreed on re-core _if_ needed, while a clutch is a no brainer due to the amount of work to change vs how easy with engine out, a rad is the same either way.. Don't be afraid to flush it, who knows what all has been in it before.. Try to figure out what kind of crude is stuck in the front, if years o...

Brake Linings
I recently did these. Went well. If anyone with a Major or New Major is looking for brakes, you'll probably know that almost all searches will turn up complete (and very expensive) shoes and every lining kit you'll find is for Super's and up or Dexta's etc.. This kit, http://www.ebay.ca/itm/26106458...

Re: Introducing myself
Just in case someone finds this posting searching for the make of their backhoe for as long as I searched... Turns out the hoe you see in the pictures of my tractor is a Henry Manufacturing unit. Probably a Mark I or a Mark II. They were made for several brands but mostly for Allis Chalmers (which a...

Re: Introducing myself
Thanks guys.. Ya pretty sure tractor was Canadian spec as the loader is the same age and is made in Ontario.. Not sure on the hoe, will keep looking at Massey's.. The few I could find with swing motor's had the motor buried in the middle of the pivot assembly instead of on top like this one.. Works ...

Paint tip for Canadians
Sorry but I don't think this helps outside of Canada :) If you're looking for a paint that is literally 99% on the mark for the Fordson blue, Home Hardware brand Weathershield (aka BeautiTone) medium blue is nearly bang on. It comes in bombs or liters and I believe it is basically the same as Tremcl...

Tach face, what is correct?
My New Major Diesel (castings say it's a 55) needs a new tach and cable. The dead one is a clockwise, but the numbers are at the bottom and the hours top. All the various replica's I have seen have the RPM scale at the top and the hours at the bottom.. Does this matter or will any clockwise tach wor...

Re: Introducing myself
OK, couple of pics, had to set up a photobucket account :) These are after 55 years of grease and oil and before 5 hours of pressure washing. If anyone recognizes the hoe attachment, feel free to chime in! I can see where a tag used to be (on inside base of boom right at controls) but it's not there...

Re: Oil Pressure
No expert at all, but our recently aquired Major Diesel didn't have any working gauges.. After adding an oil pressure gauge I was dismayed to see it report 25psi warm at 3/4 throttle and about 10psi near idle (compared to my little Deere 400 that runs 45 hot/cold and idle/full).. After much Googling...

Re: Introducing myself
We did take 'first come home' pics.. On a camera that is a pain to get the card out of but will post some soon.. Still have to sort the age of this old girl out 100% but have to assume a 55, just not sure why she got a motor from 59 in her..

Introducing myself
Just joined and also just became a Fordson owner.. We think it's a 55 (all main castings are Jan 1955), engine serial says it's a Sept 59 but it doesn't match a "Power Major" but rather is a New Major Diesel.. Came with a backhoe and farm style loader.. Runs great, very few leaks and all tin/badging...
