Re: Sump strainer gasket
Depends on the scenario. If I think the surface is good enough its good on its own, otherwise a smear on the gasket never does any harm in my opinion

Try Richard Pocock at Pocock Tractor spares. He breaks old tractors and I've alway found him very helpful. Its worth a phone call I'm assuming you are in the UK?
The other option is to get is repaired, but make sure its spotless inside before putting any heat near it.

Re: Excessive Steering Play
To get steering wheels off I have an old 3 legged bearing puller that I modified. I took off the legs and got 3 lengths of chain in their place, just loop the chain round the spokes and back up to the spider where both ends are secured with a bolt. Where the chain touched the wheel spokes I have pie...

Re: fuel leak out the pig tail
For the extra cost I'd fit a new lift pump. I've overhauled them before, but for the time it takes I don't think its worth the effort. Remember time is money, even if you are doing this for fun If you have to overhaul the pump professionally it cost me £500. Take a look at BundyBears shed. He has a ...

Re: Engine oil leak
Before going too deep and renewing the crankshaft seal, is there not meant to be oil lubricating the chain and wheels? There is normally a timing gear oil feed and this oil drains back into the sump. Perhaps this drain is partially blocked and oil is filling the housing and leaking out the cover sea...

Re: Looking for a new or used atomizer
On my dexta the "Finger press Pump tap" diaphragm failed and caused my engine to overspeed. Luckily I manage to shut the fuel off before any major damage occurred. The other risk of this diaphragm leaking is over time a cylinder can fill with fuel and your engine will hydraulic when turned over. I c...

Re: Fordson Dexta brakes replacement of brake shoe linings
I bought a set of "transfer punches" when I riveted brake linings. They were really handy on helping mushroom the rivet. The set has since been invaluable being used what they are intended for in marking out holes. For the price they are definitely an asset to your toolbox. There are plenty of sets ...

Re: How to change oil pan gaskets?
We had a very similar thing with TEF20. It started and then stalled, then would start again not long after, and then stall again. It turned out to be sucking air and not oil and from what you say it sounds very similar. We had just fitted a second hand block and there was a plug missing from the sid...

Re: How to change oil pan gaskets?
If you have a look at 'Bundy Bears Shed' on Youtube he does a great video on changing rope seals....not on a Dexta, but the principle is the same.
I've done them on a DB 880 and 990 and its easy enough.

I changed the friction plates on mine a while ago and its not too difficult. If you have the tractor split anyway its worthwhile doing it for the cost of the plates. There is information in the workshop manual detailing the setting measurements, but I never had to adjust anything when I did mine. If...

Re: Help please!! Battery still on when switch off
Check where the power to the warning light is coming from. It sounds like it is powered from a live feed from the battery. If you have an ignition switch, and its powered from there, make sure it is connected to the correct terminal. It will probably be a fairly simple fix, just look for a feed that...

As the guys say, its fairly straight forward. I'm a member of the Ayrshire Vintage tractor club and we have a guy who helps us through the process and I've done it a few times now. I needed the serial number and two photos taken from the front on either side, so that the age could be verified. There...

Re: Hand brake malfunction
I had a similar problem when I fitted a new handbrake to my Dexta. It took a few attempts to get the angle of the toothed bracket correct so that the pawl didn't slip. I had to make the holes in the mudguard oval to get the correct adjustment. You may have the same issue if it was working ok before ...

PTFE was originally designed as a thread lubricant, and not for sealing. The fact that it sometimes seals was just a bonus. I'd use it as a last resort for sealing threaded parts.

Re: Bottom end overhaul
Have you thought about stripping the engine yourself? That way you only have the cost of a regrind it that is actually necessary. The crank will only need reground if it is badly scored, and you may get away with a polishing. A decent verier calliper will soon let you know if they are badly worn bef...

Re: Dexta not starting
A few years back, the diaphragm on my cold start priming button failed and caused excess fuel to go into the cylinders when stopped, causing it to hydraulic. I replaced this button pump with the type you have fitted and also fitted the cold start system similar to a MF35 (Auxiliary fuel tank Agrilin...

Re: How much paint do i need
You have had some great advice so far, and I'd definitely have a go at beating out the dents so as to use less fillers. When I first started I found I was hitting too hard, so small taps is the way to go. Thin layers of filler work best, and are easier to rub down. When it comes to spraying I use 5:...

Re: Dexta Diesel Overheating?
30-60 seconds is not long for an engine to cool down if it has indeed stopped on overheating. Sounds more like a fuel issue as I had a similar event on my Dexta recently, it just died after having run fairly hard and restarted again fairly soon after. When I looked at the lift pump it was fairly bad...

Pulsing hydraulics
I have recently had a transport box and fingerbar mower mounted on my Dexta. With the transport box in the fully raised position there is hydraulic 'pulsing' felt about every 5 seconds, dropping the box slightly stops this for a while before it starts again. With the fingerbar mower on, and the mowe...

I would shy away from welding anything onto it for now. If you still struggle to get it off with a square tool, you could try a stilton on it, but watch your knuckles and be careful not to shear it off, bahco also do a shifter with a serated jaw that are brilliant for this sort of job (Bahco 9071P B...
