Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Latest developments-

I’ve managed to turn engine by hand so the single marks are aligned but in doing this I’ve found another 3 equally spaced marks directly on the other side of the flange?

I now see the blindingly obvious 4 bolts on the cradle- this all makes sense now.

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Once again, thanks for making the time to write such a detailed reply. This is really useful information. Thanks for spotting the spare pump on ebay- may be worth getting for spares?? *Removing Pump & Timing I've cleaned around the timing marks and read the manual but I'm a little unclear about this...

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Ok many thanks. Excuse my complete ignorance when it comes to engineering, but are you advising I should make a mark on part of the pump that corresponds with a position on the engine before I remove pump- this is because the pump will undoubtedly turn when it’s off the engine and could go back in t...

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

I've just found this fordson.se/2A_Br%E4nslesystem_mm_Suplem ... 01-030.pdf

I'm guessing that if my engineer follows the instructions for the Mk I engine when removing pump I should be ok?

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Yes the engine was off when moving throttle.

Did you get your pump re-built then?

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Hello there, I've managed to take a look inside the pump and have a video Link- https://youtu.be/yMGfFl0Smi4 The mechanism(rack??) inside moves freely although it does seem like the nut from one of the 4 bolts has come loose-as you can see on video. It also looks like the linkage around where thrott...

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Hello,
Thanks very much for taking the time to write such a detailed response. This is very helpful.
Interesting to hear the history of the different pumps too- now the picture is clearer.

I’ll give this a try and see how it goes.

Cheers. Ed

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Thank you.
My side cover actually has 8 screws but I’m guessing that’s still what you are referring to.
It’s a flat plate on the side of the pump behind the lift pump

Removing a fuel pump

Hi Folks, It's looking like I need to remove the pump from my engine. Luckily there's a place near me that can re-condition the pump. Here's a few pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/94721980@N ... 180817849/ I believe that there's some timing marks on engine for taking pump off. I think I found a man...

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Trying to post photos but not sure how on here. ok, I've just checked and pump has no oil in it. I've replaced it a while back but didn't check before this trip- silly me:( I've also just read that these pumps ( mine being an early mechanical one) leak over time and need to be checked regularly. Bug...

Re: Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Hello there.

Thanks for your response.
It’s actually been confirmed in a previous post after posting pics that it’s an early Simms pump with mechanical Governor and not very common apparently as the engine is an industrial one. I’ll post a photo shortly though.

Suspected Fuel Pump trouble

Hello folks, I have a Simms fuel Pump on my mid 50's 4D engine (in my boat) The engine has always 'hunted' a bit in idle and under load to a certain extent and yesterday after using the engine for 45 mins, I turned off for a while and when re-starting the revs were unusually high- almost as if the i...

Thanks very much for the help again. I can also take some more photos of the pump if that will help although it sounds like you already have a good idea of which one it is.

Re: Hunting

Also, somebody who has experience of these pumps mentioned they can suffer wear in the Tufnol Coupling (?) and this could be the cause of the issue. I'd be very interested to hear other's opinions.

Hunting

Hello folks, A while back I posted about my engine surging or hunting. At the time I thought that my engine had a Pnuematic governor but after a look at some online manuals and from very useful help on here it seems it's a mechanical governor. The pump is Simms Mimimec on a pre-1957 Industrial Engin...

Re: 4D Engine identification

Hello there, it's only been a year or two but I'm back working on my engine.
I found some more letters stamped ABA does this mean anything. I can't find anything else which I think is a casting code.

drain nut for cooling system?

Hi there, I'm trying to find the point to drain my 4D mk1 cooling system. Is there a nut on the block somewhere? I haven't found it yet.
Also, I'm after a 50/50 anti-freeze mix, does anyone know the capacity of the cooling system? will 10 Litres of anti-freeze be enough?
many thanks

Ed
