Re: Rare (I think) battery clamp

Hi,

I looked up the part no again ont he cnh website. It is #81784828 and listed for the fordson tractor 01/53 - 12/64 in the engine section under frame, exhaust system and battery clamps.

It is a modern part no, although no units on stock according to the website.

Re: Our '53 FMD

It's had a paint job at some time but original build, original radiator too with the brass neck. Are the sidelights the type with the anti-glare ring on the rim or the plain type with plain rims? They changed around that time in 1953. Hi, Will make a detail picture. Can’t remember having a major wi...

Re: Our '53 FMD

Lovely Major there. You have the original negative lead too, but yours is in one piece, Billy's battery connector needs fixing as it's in bits, and Davie doesn't have the original connector. Do you have a pic of the solenoid end? If you can find a battery clamp (like billy's one, see this thread: h...

Our '53 FMD

Hi, Not too long ago my Father and I bought this 1953 Fordson Major Diesel. In our opinion it is an nice original tractor. Some details: original engine no valve lifter on back of engine 4 bolt injection pump pump upright instead of inclined louvres in front of radiator wide fan belt wire mesh grill...

Re: 59 Power Major revival

Hi Sandy, Totally agree with you. Did repair some in the past, with good results. Keep in mind the design itself is not bullet proof. The aluminum cover can easily be cracked and when it breaks with a running engine you really have a problem. If any safety doubts, put a new one in. These things can ...

Hi,

What’s wrong with the new available dual clutches? Only heard positive things about them.

Hi, Brian wrote some years ago he had difficulties getting the proper release bearing. The correct size was not available and he ended up making a special spacer between the bearing and the release mechanism. I hope you’ve more luck with finding parts, but otherwise try to find this post on this boa...

Re: virtually siezed major

Hi, Agree with other writers on solution to your prob. Find out where the oil did go and 2nd, check whats broken before ordering parts. So start taking it out and dismantle is a good idea. Otherwise you might end up paying for an extra shipment for something you didn’t expect to need. And you might ...

Re: 59 Power Major revival

Hi Sandy, Relick, Didn't mean to make it melt down like in a blast furness. :D When you heat it to around 70-80 degrees around the plungers it becomes a lot easier to flush out gummed up diesel then it is at ambient temperature. That temp it can perfectly withstand without damage. Imagine how hot it...

Re: 59 Power Major revival

Hi, Biodiesel gums up when it ages. You might find your plungers are glued with gummed up biodiesel. Tricky to solve without damaging your pump. Taking pump apart might be an idea, but only with the right equipment in a room clean enough to do so. So for most people, including me a no go. May be war...

Hi,

It certainly has different looks then the Lucas one. I think the end cover is easyer to work with then the Lucas one with or without the brush cover band.

How do the internals compare?

Hi, This auction ended up in ridiculous prices in my Dutch point of view. Other way round, I would have been a wealthy man when I lived in England and sold my tractors in such an auction. :D It’s a P/P major who got up to this £ 11.200 by the way. Luckily I value having and using these tractors far ...

Hi, To prevent being mis understood. I thought about a fun conversion to a 6 cylinder. Building from scratch. For real live the dexta with its original engine is quite close to perfect. In real live I only want tractors cars etc to be fully original. Back to topic; the Ford Diesel engines where desi...

Re: Dexta with Major engine

Hi, Nice tractor. Definitely not a dexta bell housing, the bulge for the starter gear is not there on the right hand side. Don’t think it’s a major bell housing either. No place to fit the frame channels to. Some handy guy has been fabricating something I suppose. Never read in literature about ford...

Try not to be too down about it. These engines are tough and will take some abuse...just don't try running it again before you are 100% oil is getting through and the bearings are all ok.
Exactly this. Fully agree.

Re: How to change oil pan gaskets?

Hi, Sandy is right. You need to split tractor at the clutch housing, remove clutch and flywheel ringer to the oil seal housing. It is quite a job, but one can do it with basic tools and common sense. Can’t remember whether the back plate should come of or not, but that isn’t the problem when you’ve ...

Hi,

Did you time the injection to the 20 or 26 degrees mark on the flywheel?

The mechanical should be the 20 degrees setting. The knocking indicates to early injection I think.

Re: So you're supposed to change the oil in your governor - Who knew?

Hi, Your 59 dexta should have an vacuum governor who does not require lubricant. If your engine has been swapped for an mechanical governed type you should do a oil change. To distinguish the two types, the vacuum one has throttle control on the air manifold. The mechanical one the throttle control ...

Hi, These bacteria are very happy in an environment where diesel and water are available. IMHO the only cure is keeping your tank clean. So gauze in funnel, fuel out of clean containers or better from the petrol station directly. Water gets in the tank easily, when temperatures go down there will be...

Hi,

Don’t forget to mark the position of the nut against the gear and count the number of turns to undo the nut. If you reassemble the same then the bearing preload here should be fine.

Setting pre load isn’t difficult but involves a lot of work when you do it by the book.
