How to protect topper from rust?
Hello, Until I've built a barn I have to store my Major and topper outside. The topper is susceptible to rust even though its covered by plastic sheeting. I seem to remember coating machinery stored outside in a solution of grease thinned with petrol (the idea being, I imagine that the petrol evapor...

Re: Where to buy new solenoid?
Thanks Pavel. Unfortunately the wiring on my Power Major appears to have little in common with that shown on the diagram. http://s25.postimg.org/hyacxtcnv/Wiring_diagram_Power_Major_expanded.jpg The wires are different colours and the diagram does not seem to include the cooler fan and the ignition ...

Re: Where to buy new solenoid?
Hello again. I've just changed my solenoid. However one of the wires has become disconnected and I've no idea where it goes. It's the other end of the wire fitted to the non-battery terminal (i.e. fitted to the rhs of the body of the solenoid). The Fordson wiring diagram is a little confusing as it o...

Re: Renewing wiring. Add headlights?
Thanks Pavel. I've just changed the solenoid and one of the wires has come loose (not from the solenoid end!). And the diagram does not tally with my wiring so I've asked a question on the original solenoid thread. :-( Do you know if there is anywhere I can download the manual all at once? It's quit...

Re: PTO running slowly?
Hi Brian. First. Thanks very much for running this site. Resources like these are invaluable and for me at least, one of the best facets of the internet. As for covering running costs, donations are one route, and what about small payments for manuals (I have bought manuals via eBay)? There are defi...

Re: Renewing wiring. Add headlights?
Thanks for these responses. I'll have a delve with my multimeter. I had assumed that the battery was OK as it doesn't lose charge when disconnected. The wiring is generally old and dodgy (and I am already due to fit a new regulator) so I'll see if I can sort out what is there and add the lights if I...

Re: PTO running slowly?
Ah, your PM is the same year as mine. Can I see a photo of it somewhere? I've looked at the site home page and can find lots of links to useful stuff. However none of them work. They depend upon the DynDNS service and http://fordsonlad.dyndns.org/ does not seem to exist any longer. I can access the ...

Renewing wiring. Add headlights?
Hi, I think my PMs wiring is up the swanny. If I leave the battery connected for more than a few minutes after I've finished using the machine the battery goes flat and neither of the dials on the steering column work. So, I'm thinking I might have a crack at sorting the electrics out. Whilst I am a...

Re: PTO running slowly?
Hello chaps. Thank you both for replying. I am now intimately acquainted with my topper and most especially the PTO shaft. I have learnt that, unless you have to it is best not to split the shaft. Luckily for me it turned out to be a broken sheer bolt and as the tractor came with a set of spare bolt...

Re: PTO running slowly?
Thanks for your reply Brian. I'm sorry I gave so little info. I am very much a novice. I was given a 10 minute lesson on how to operate this 1959 Power Major and forgot most of it before I got on it again three months later! The hydraulics work fine. It has one clutch. To engage the PTO I depress th...

PTO running slowly?
Hello. I've come to top my field for a second time but the topper blades are only running at about 60rpm and so won' cut the grass. I've been told that it sounds liked the PTO is running too slowly. It is certainly not revolving at anything like 500rpm anyway. Everything worked fine two weeks ago an...

Dave. Which thread are you referring to? There only one link in my 'dumb battery' thread and it's to a solenoid that is only available in the US (I'm in the UK).

Maybe this is the reason the previous owner stuck that grey tape on it.

Re: Where to buy new solenoid?
Hahaha. Thanks.
When the solenoid smoked the battery was not well charged. I've since charged it and today the tractor started just fine. No smoke at all.
Flummoxed.

Re: Where to buy new solenoid?
Thanks for this Dave. A bit of a shame as I've left it standing in the middle of the garden. Looks like it'll be there for a few days longer. Better apologise to the wife.

Where to buy new solenoid?
Hello. When I am starting the engine on my newly acquired Power Major this thing (which I told is probably the solenoid) gives off quantities of thick electrical smelling smoke. I am told it is on the way out. Any idea how/where I buy another? I am in the UK. Also, what do you think the last owner s...

Re: Dumb newby battery charging question
Thanks very much. Thanks also for the electrolyte tip. It's a few decades since I dealt with this sort of stuff and I was prepared to stick just distilled water in it. Would you mind if I asked another question? The negative battery lead is attached to a small thing (3 inches high, 2 inches wide?). ...

Dumb newby battery charging question
Hello. Sorry for this post... I have to charge the battery of my recently acquired Power Major. I can't tell if its a sealed or open type though. I've looked for info on the battery but drawn a blank so I'm hoping someone will be able to help me. The battery is a New Holland. Part No 643, 640 amp, 9...

Re: Identify my tractor? And oil?
Hello, I've been searching around for other numbers. I've found one under the seat and one on the engine below the right hand side exhaust pipe (see top image above). Neither are particularly readable. The one on the engine might be: 5789012, or 5759012, or even 6759012! The one directly under the s...

Re: Identify my tractor? And oil?
Well, thanks very much for the responses (although I am not too sure if I should be very worried about the last two or not). I'm quite happy with 1959, the year of the liberation of Cuba and of my birth. I've poked around the engine for some more numbers but so far the only one I can see that I can ...

Identify my tractor? And oil?
Hello. I've just bought a Fordson Power major to top my field with. I know it's a Fordson Power Major because it says so on the bonnet. This is almost all I know about it (apart from it's blue with red wheels). I have looked at the engine for a serial number but can only find this: EIADDN-6050-G 131...

Re: Engine oil for '54/56 Power Major?
Ah. I was worried whether I'd got the right group. I did see the sticky but then read some other info here that seemed to contradict it and, as as you can see I'm not even sure which tractor I have! I'll post some photos and the serial number (assuming I can find it!) in the forum you mention. Thank...
